Charleston & Hilton Head are practically identical as far as temp. goes, there is only about 100 miles between. I am guessing the temp. only varies by 5 degrees at most. (I know my location says Dallas but lived in SC for many, many years)

What's your tolerance for heat, humidity, spiders, snakes, alligators, mosquitos and palmetto bugs? Those are the trade-offs you're considering. The coastal SC/NC climate has its advantages, but humans aren't the only ones who enjoy the warm, humid conditions.

looks like you're limiting yourself to the coast. most people tend to think that Charleston and Hilton Head are a good deal hotter than Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, and the outer banks.

i live in Wilmington, and i agree. I find that the big difference is the constant breeze we have, that didn't seem characteristic of Charleston at all. Plus it doesn't get quite so humid here along the NC coast, as it does in Charleston.

but in general, anywhere along the coast, from Hilton Head on up to the North Carolina outer banks, will be similar. Hot summer weather lasts until August/September and you will have highs in the 70's that persist until December. on the flip side, our cold months are December, Jan, and February, and cold weather will persist occasionally up until March or April. In Spring and Fall, people often comment how crazy the weather is, a high of 80 one day, and a low of 30 the next.

when you come in from the coast, and go inland a ways (Columbia, Greenville, Raleigh, etc.), it becomes drier year-round. Also it is generally hotter in the summer peak and colder in the winter trough, when you live inland.

Agree with what has been said among other posters. Summers in these coastal areas are brutally hot & humid. Mold factor with these conditons is also very high in these areas.
Winters, however, the opposite is true, as they can be as cold as the summers are hot.

I live in the Myrtle Beach area and have written a blog regarding the winters in this particular SC locations. Please check this out and Good Luck in your decision!
