To me the extra cost is worth the experience of living near the beach, enjoying the nicer year round temperatures and the conveniences of the Grand Strand.

I would agree, I think the extra cost is worth it also.

Electric bills seem to always go up during the month of january and february. My water bill runs anywhere from $18.00 - $ 23.00 per month through GSW&S. My phone and cable bills are around $ 125.00. That includes high speed internet and digital cable.
The cost of food is ridiculous. Which is why I go through local farmers and the farmers market to buy meat, fruits, and vegetables.

Any ideas on property taxes on the Carolina Coast and/or Fort Mill area? Here in Maine we pay $3800 a year on a 1600 sq. foot home built in 99.
Also people keep talking about the cost of food what is more expensive? Produce? Meats? Dairy? all?

I don't think that the groceries are more expensive than up north but they are not cheaper like many other things are. No one has mentioned gas... I filled up at Costco in Myrtle Beach the other day for $2.79 a gal. I think.
My wife has mentioned that her grocery shopping experience has seen many items cost about .05 to .10 cents more.
Property taxes: I am in Georgetown county and pay $1580 a year on 3800 heated sqft. Horry may be slightly more and some of the counties to the west are less.

Grocery prices are more money then NJ. Plus it seems you won't get the good sales like I use to get up in NJ. I need to go to more stores to get what I need, I try and shop for sales.
We moved in March - I lived in Bergen Cty, which is pretty expensive. I just went to visit in June and made a trip to Costco, example - ground beef in NJ is $1.99 per pound, in Myrtle Beach it is $2.49 per pound. I actually did some grocery shopping up in NJ and took it back with me. Here I only shop for meat at Costco.
The food store I use to shop at in NJ the sales flyer would be about 25 pages - here the sales flyer at times is 4 pages.
The food stores are not as big and the meat selection is smaller then what I am use to plus more expensive.
I really haven't found any food to be cheaper here then NJ. But I wouldn't trade it. My taxes in NJ were about $5200 per year, which is consider to be low - here they should be about $1500. I would never have a brand new house in NJ either. I love it here!
I am actually surprised how the food is more expensive here. Gas was the same or cheaper in NJ at the time

It's hard to compete with NJ gas prices... it's all about the taxes!

I am not a Troll, nor am I "lurking", we are seeking a future retirement spot. Is there land available to build a home on around the west side of the waterway? We would not need a huge lot, something small for a unique last home. S.C is on the list of trips we will be making this fall. Thanks! And thank you Sheena for being so helpful.

You are welcome

Speaking of food selection, I just came back from Kroeger in Carolina Forest. The food is cheaper than AZ and the selection.....OMG!!! I've never seen many of those products. The fish selection alone made my head spin and I lived in NY for 27 years before AZ.

That is so funny - because the lst. time I went into Kroger's I couldn't beleive how small it was and how you didn't have much selection. Our supermarkets in NJ were HUGE - the whole back of the store would be meat and seafood. Our pasta aisle would be one whole side and much longer aisle.
I seem to do alot of shopping at Costco here.
But I still wouldn't trade it. My husband does miss good bagels!
