Let's not forget food prices have risen in the past 6 months or so, so those from Joisey saying prices are higher here may be unaware they're now higher everywhere. If you shop at places like Whole (Foods) Paycheck, you're really in for it.

Actually I was just in NJ in June - I went shopping and brought back a bunch of stuff with me. The prices were still cheaper in NJ, especially on meat.
Costco in NJ - ground beef was $1.99 per pound
Costco in MB- ground beef was & still is $2.49 per pound.
Living here I need to go to more stores to get good deals, I actually seem to get good prices at Target, but I shop at Krogers, BiLo, CVS, Target & Walmart and Costco

With gas at $3 a gallon and the wear and tear on your vehicle, you really don't save too much going to a bunch of different stores, unless they are all pretty close to each other. Not to mention the time it takes.

I am not paying $3 per gallon yet - it has been $2.73 at Costco. But all the stores are in the same area, I am not going out of my way to get to them. I get my list together and what is on sale at what store and I do it all in one shot.

At Wegmans ( an awesome grocery store) in PA I could get bonless skinless chicken breast for $1.79 a pound then and now and here in SC I have not found them for less then $3 a pound. My mom is on her way for a visit and bringing with her 10 lbs of chicken breast so I could save a few bucks.
I have found the best prices at Wal Mart in Rock Hill and the Super Target in Steele Creek area. It took a neighbors suggestion for me to shop these places as I never knew Wal Mart and Target sold groceries because the ones near my home town did not.
For my luxury food trips I love Lowes Food stores.

Where is Carolina Forest and Waterford Plantation? We have a lot in Georgetown Cnty with no "time-to-build" restriction, but once when we visited the odor from the paper mill was unbearable, another time (Thanksgiving 2007, I think?) the mosquitoes were unbearable but there was no odor. I think that, before we build, we should spend a full year year on our boat at a marina in Georgetown. There are factors beyond cost-of-living that we didn't realize or consider before buying the lot. As for taxes: we're already paying $500/yr for the 56X115' empty lot! That's $500 for 0 sq. ft!!

Let me see if I understand... You bought a lot early because of the potential for value appreciation, and you're complaining you have to pay taxes on it? Did you not know that when you bought it?? Did you also not do enough homework to know that Georgetown has a paper mill??? Perhaps, if you ask nicely, they'll close the plant so you aren't offended.
Carolina Forest and Waterford are large northern-immigrant neighborhoods located along the Hwy 501 urban jungle between Conway and Myrtle Beach. There's a real good chance you won't smell the paper mill there, but I'm pretty sure they have mosquitoes. You can also join the other residents in complaining about noise from the nearby MB Speedway, which was holding races 50 years before Carolina Forest was ever built.

To Pawley's Dude
Let me get this straight Dude you post your comments like we came straight from Monkey Island. I'll tell you this we put down hard earned money into Harmony not knowing Tim the builder is a crook. We also were told the papermill would have scrubbers installed Dude, and that apparently never happened! Seems like the place we thought to retire in Dude is nothing more then a bunch of scams and know it all like you.

Hey Al. I'm so sorry that you had a bad investment experience down here. We have a place over in Garden City and I'm not quite sure of where you guys are but I know the paper mills are the WORST with regards to smell. Not only is it a terrible nuisance but I think it must be unhealthy to boot. It's just a darn shame that lowlife developers promise the moon to folks, take their hard-earned retirement money and leave folks disappointed. Yep, I think that you are on the right track with living in the area on your boat for a while to find out the best place to settle. Murrell's inlet has a marina but I'm not sure if they do live-aboards slips there....you'll have to forgive me I don't know much about boats. If there is any information that might be helpful to you, please don't hesitate to ask.....I'll do anything I can to help you out. God bless our Veterans and their families!
