Default Are you supposed to tip at Sonic ?

Had my first Sonic experince - the kids were beging. ANyway as my husband was pulling away we thought maybe we should have tipped. We took the choice of where you pull up to the speaker and place your order then they bring it to your car and you eat it in there.

I was a little dissapointed that they were not on roller skates as I had invisioned.

You tip the carhop if the bring the food out to you unless you use the drive thru, or at least that is the most practical advice I can offer.

if you tip 20 percent that is really nice gesture . for car hops I do same as I do the pizza delivery person 15 percent.

Im not trying to be tight but it not like restaurant where they keep my glass full or see if I need anything else etc. 15 percent is minimum tip and I go between that and 20 at restaurant.

dont sweat it it happens.

sixinthefamily - if you go to the Sonic on 160 (near the corner of 160 and Gold Hill Road), those carhops are on skates (my kids love watching them roll around).

One of the carhops on skates ran into my co-worker's car at the one on Arrowood and Sonic had to pay to fix the dent and scratches (it was minor). But Sonic it is usually just me so I will order at the window and pay with cc, so no tip necessary. Sonic is cheap so I don't feel like I should spend an extra 20% there, but I will give them a dollar or so if they do come out to my car.

I know a couple of guys that own several Sonic Drive-Ins in Charleston SC. I called and asked them about this question. They said "do not tip the car hop when they bring you the food." They are paid more than minimum wage and are not considered waitresses making $2.35/hr and relying on tips." "This after all is their job." However they added "If the carhop returns to check on you, brings you extra items you requested such as napkins, ketchup, etc., or goes above and beyond the simple delivery of your food to the curb, then by all means tip them if you would like".
