Things I have learned in SC
We are here a week and there are sooo many things I would never think are different but are living in SC. My girlfriend and her family are moving down here within the year (waiting for house to sell) and when I tell her some things she says she's glad to learn it now before they get down here.
1. In SC you don't go to the corner and make a left...you go to the corner and TAKE a left
2. You will be here 2 days and find yourself talking with a little twang in your voice ..but refuse to admit it
3. If you go to the local pizzaria to get a chicken parm hero...you will not get breaded cutlets with mozzerella on a hero... you will get... plain chicken cutlets with onions, peppers, and mozzerella on a hoggie
4. They have WHITE cows here in SC
5. Garbage pick up is ONCE a week
6. LOTS of worship channels on tv
7. There are SLUGS everywhere
8. Lots of areas do not have the package with cable, internet and tv yet
9. Bi-Lo food stores does not have a selection ANYWHERE near NY/NJ standards.lol.... I did find sausage at Publix though ..THANKS! The canned tomatos...2 choices....Ricotta...2 choices..Bread crumbs.. 1 choice and all are very small containers.lol.
10.Do not go under 1/4 tank of gas when you get here... you NEVER know when you will be on some winding road and your gas light will be on and every gas station you pass will be closed for the night
Those are some of my thoughts for anyone who is moving to this area.. it doesn't apply to everyone...some people might be used to this but coming from NY we are not.

I take it you came from the city?
I had to go out of town last month. I left at 5:30 a.m. No gas staions open then, either. The pace is just a little slower, you get used to it.
You are correct, you do have to TAKE those lefts, don't you. In a month or two it will be second nature.
On the other hand, you can get real fresh brewed sweet tea EVERYWHERE.

Welcome!
Welcome to South Carolina. Everything is slower...service, selection, acceptance. But there is charm and graciousness we didn't experience up north. I grew up in NJ and lived much of my adult life in New England. People are rude in NJ and cold in NE. It can be different here. Just make sure your gracious too. If we wanted it the same, we should have stayed up north . I'm not quite sure the locals were ready for this second invasion of the "D___n Yankees".

Yeah not too many things at the stores too pick from. There is a New chain of stores opening up in simpsonville. It is called Bloom they say they have a bigger verity of things too choice from there... Think it is going to be open by December.
And they are going to be building a Super Bi-Lo in simpsonville as well. Going to be the biggest one ever built in all of the stores that they have here...
And one thing that im excited about they are finally going too be building a movie Theater here in simpsonville. And always thought it was funny that they never had one before.
And it is an even more of a nice place too live if you want too get fat! They have tons and tons of places too eat at! Always thought it should be renamed too Foodville!

Thanks Laura, you gave me 10 more reasons not to move. Let me give you some reasons to move back:
1. 7-11's... need a Slurpee at 3a.m., No problem.
2. Want a chicken parm hero... 4,287 places to get it from.
3. Go food shopping? Forget it. Just call in your order, have it delivered.
4. Run out of gas? Push your 10 feet to the next gas station; pick yourself up a burrito while you're there.
5. Phone, Internet, Cable TV: one bill.

lol... very cute. I have to say the reason we moved here is the cost of living in NY, a better place for our children, more relaxed for us.....
I have to give some credit where credit is due though... I don't NOT like it here.lol. It's just that there is alot for me to get used to.
Some of the reasons we moved:
Sales tax in NY: 8 3/4 %
Sales tax in SC: 5-7%
Car insurance in NY: $2000 year
Car insurance in SC: LESS than $1000
Property tax NY: $10,000-$12,000
Property tax SC: $1000-$1600
Cigarettes NY: $5 pack
Cigarettes SC: $2.75
Beautiful home in nice area NY: $500,000
" " beautiful area in SC: $250,000
In NY it was taxing on us as parents for my husband to work a full time job..and a part time job as well as myself work full time...and still struggle. This move is for quality of family life....I miss my family like crazy but I know this choice is for the good. Our mortgage in NY was $3500...and we put down $80,000 on our last house. It was in a decent area but not the RITZ by any means... Five of our 6 were in school in NY and every month they were going on field trips... I know it sounds stupid but at $10 a clip for the 5 is $50 a month extra. Every other day was something they wanted you to send in for...a party, supplies, plays, etc. It just got out of hand.
In SC.... I was shocked that the lists for school supplies was NOTHING near what they are up in NY. Your basic tissues, sanitizers, #2 pencils, notebook..but that is it. My kids didn't have to have the crayons, scissors, rulers, etc.. the schools all have that. Last year in NY I was asked for your basic tissues, sanitizers, crayons, pencils, scissors, erasers, ruler, then you had your.... .FILM, BABY WIPES, PHOTO ALBUMS, etc etc again... crazy.
So basicly ... i'll have to learn to slow down and relax and take the time to sit and smell the flowers.....in NY I never had the time because you are running like mad to make your bills.
And YES>>>> I do miss my 3 am 7-11 run or the white castle run.lmao!!!

Laura,
I thought I read on here that someone was shocked at the car insurance rates--being to high because of all the uninsured drivers? Maybe it was on another forum.
Your right. Your just finding things out like everyone else that moves some place new, it is hard.

Just to personalize it for myself...
Sales tax: I'm a guy, I don't buy much. (Same shoes for the last 2 years.)
Car insurance: I don't own a car. (No gas, oil, insurance, repairs, registration, tickets, or hassle.)
Cigarettes: I don't smoke.
Beautiful home in nice area: Will inherit two, one from parents, one from grandparents. I can wait.
Property taxes: With what I save on car insurance and cigarettes, I can pay for the whole block. LOL
I think I hear Mr. Softee coming. Gotta run!
