Those places still exist in SC, but they're getting harder and harder to find. The de-Southernization of SC is most evident in places that are seen as offering the most desirable amenities. The Charleston folks will yell and scream and disagree, but there's really nothing Southern left along SC's coast except memories and humidity. Most of the coast has been bulldozed into "planned communities", any of which could be picked up en-masse, dropped down in Ohio, and fit right in.

Pawleys Dude, with all due respect, South Carolina has one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast in the ACE Basin and with our state parks (Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach, Edisto, Hunting Island, etc) we have more undeveloped and protected land per capita than any other state.

White people left Miami due to the Muriel Boatlift of 1980 when Fidel Castro unloaded some 125,000 criminals in Miami.
Before the Muriel Boatlift, Miami's Latino population hovered around 3%. Today the white population hovers around 3%.
If you want racist, head to Miami. They are horribly racist against black people.
There was a popular bumper sticker in Miami that read "Will the last American leaving Miami turn out the light and grab the American Flag".

The way I was raised you treat people as human beings with respect until they give you a reason to treat them otherwise. Like I said a couple of posts ago. It does not matter to me what the reason is. If white people are leaving Florida or any other state over the color of someone's skin they are ignorant racists!
People need to get over the BS....we live on the planet earth together and nothing is going to change that.

Wow! This thread is hot! Lol. I can't believe it's gone this long and linix(sp?) hasn't cut you folks off. Must be because I haven't been here. I kid, I kid. Lol. I will say this. A person who does anything based on race alone, is indeed a racist. A hit dog will holler.

I didn't bother to read this entire thread. Just let me say that as another dreaded transplanted Yankee I fully sympathize with native southerners concerning their fear of being overrun by us. You know, it's quite ironic. When I was a kid in Chicago, the industrial north was booming and southerners both white and black were flocking north to work in the mills, factories and auto plants. Through a combination of management and union incompetence, and a good dose of government bureaucracy the north has managed to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs and that accounts for a good portion of northerners headed your way. Of course there are lots of retirees, but many have come down here to survive just like southerners of generations ago fled to the north. Anyway, I've been here for over 8 years and acceptance has been slow to nil. A lot of it is that people tend to gravitate to those they know and grew up with. It's the same in Chicago and Pittsburgh where I also lived for a long time. So the best advice I can give to southerners is to cling to the best things in your history and culture, while at the same time expect more and more newcomers from up north. It really is becoming a third world economy up there. So like Frankie Valli used to sing, hang on to what you've got. The south is a great place in many ways, and not all of us are down here to act superior and treat the natives in a condescending manner. Thanks for being here and offering us a home. I'm an American and I live in and love the south.

I grew up in Aiken. I highly recommend it. It is a very nice town and my parents still live there. It has good schools, it has jobs available and is beautiful. If you like horses you will love it there. It also has a nice historic downtown. It was a good place to grow up.
My wife grew up in Williamsburg County. In my opinion it's not as nice. The people there are nice, but its a little too economically downtrodden.
After we got married we lived in Charleston for 9 years. It was wonderful We loved it. It kind of makes me sad for people to complain that it has been overrun with transplants and is not southern. I think that for a city it's size. Charleston has done more to maintain its identity than any city in the South. I think it's an example of Southern living brought into the 21st century.
I currently live in the Midwest. I like it here too. I think small towns in the Midwest are very similar to Southern towns. I think the problems that most people in this thread have is with development and it's attendant problems, not with anyone from any particular region. Over time someone born and raised in Atlanta is going to be more similar to someone from NYC, than from Aiken, for example.
As far as why people move south, I think there are two reasons. First, jobs are moving there because taxes are lower and more companies are moving to the Sun Belt. Companies also move there because there is less union presence and it is cheaper to do business.People follow jobs. The second reason is the weather. People hate winter. As we have progressed as a society and people have become more mobile it makes sense they want to go where it's warmer. All this talk about repudiation of the northern way of life or people longing for the southern way of life is just bunk.
One thing I did not like about the south is the open disdain for outsiders. Immigration brings innovation, new ideas and progress. Progress is good. It makes life easier for people and in the long run puts more money in your pocket.
I also hate how all the discussion of this degrade into racial discussions. I don't like how some people always say it's racism, I also don't like how some people think that it's unfathomable that the South could somehow be equated with racism. Get your heads out of the sand people. There was a long history of racism in the South and a lot of people have misappropriated the term "Southern Values" as code for racist behavior. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but it's something that has to be accepted before we can move on from what has been a terrible past.
I know it's ironic because there are a lot of racists in the North and I also think it's ironic that the one Southern Big City (Atlanta) is more integrated and has more of a Black middle class than any northern city. But I also don't think the Southern stereotype is completely undeserved and I think denying it does no one any good.
Just my opinion, but I would be curious to see what others think....

Ok, I just have to ask something...... I am a Yankee and my family including 2 children are relocating to Upstate SC for my husband's job. I had heard such good things about upstate being open to us northerners, but reading this thread I am wondering if we are making a mistake moving. My son is only 10 and I would hate to have him suffer.

Don't worry. What you heard about the Upstate being open to Northerners is absolutely right. Lots of Northern transplants in the area especially areas around Greenville and Spartanburg. A good number of folks one meets around here are from someplace else originally.
I didn't bother re-reading this thread, but there are plenty of good ones with information that will help you in the Greenville-Spartanburg subforum.

People in the South want to maintain the Southern culture, and when Northerners move down, they dilute the culture...
Gimme a break. I actually believe you are a troll now. They're tired of the Southern mentality? I would be tired of the Yankee mentality! And yes, good paying jobs are there for those who work hard, just like you should have too.
If you were from a town with a strong sense of pride and culture, and others moved in and the culture went away, you would be a little upset my dear. I have nothing against yankees, I just want old fashioned Southern culture. Also, knowing that most of the Northern cities are some of the most raicially segregated, please tell me how y'all interact and are so "accepting" of each other. When I was in NYC, people sneered at me and called me a dumb effin hick, these people are liberals and say how accepting they are of others.
I do not think I need to address this in depth... yes of course there are Southerners moving North, but do you see Boston/NYC/DC/Philly/Chicago becoming less Northern and more Southern? NO! Also, take a look at the census and how people are flocking South in swarms to sunbelt cities. I hope people are just blessed when they meet you, sir!
I MUST try that out in Abbeville when I go to visit!!! The downtown really does look charming and picturesque.

Do you have any idea of how many southern folk (black) moved into our northern cities by the millions? Give me a break. Talk about changing our culture here. Oops, I forgot, you don't consider African-Americans really "southern" do you. Your post is another attempt at belittling people from the north, or dare I say, liberals. The north is not depressing my dear. I can't tell you how many southern people I've met who love living in NYC because of what it offers. What you want is a narrow minded, bible thumping Christian town. And god knows there is plenty of that down south. Good luck to you.
