Default Registering Vehicles in SC?

My wife and I moved to Fort Mill from NC a few months ago. We're going to get our vehicles registered and get our SC plates and licenses sometime this week. Stupid question - If we are getting two cars registered, do we need to bring both cars with us or can we get the cars registered and our plates without having both cars at the DMV office?

You don't have to bring the cars, just the car registration with you.

You will need to go tax office first, get them assesed, pay the taxes, then go next door and register them. If your vehicle has a lien, bring the lienholders' name and address too.

I read in a post on here last night that you have to have birth certificates and marriage lics. to register veh. in S.C. Is that true? All have to be originals as well? This seems difficult

of course don't forget to bring LOTS OF MONEY, the personal property tax, depending on the year and value of the vehicle can be quite high, I registered 2 cars and a motorcycle here when I moved here in Nov. 2006 and it cost me $1800.00 for the 3

I'm in process of doing the same thing. Here's the order you need to do it in:

1. Change your address with your auto insurance company
2. Fax NC registrations to York Tax Auditor's Office. 803-684-8563.
3. Go online (after 24 hours) and pay tax bill on :: York County Government Home ::. Print receipts.
4. Fill out form 400 from SC DMV website http://www.scdmvonline.com/DMVNew/forms/400.pdf
5. Go to DMV with existing title and registration, completed form 400, receipts from paid property tax, proof of insurance, and money to pay Title and Registration fees (about $40 bucks from what I can determine)

I am ready for step 5, which I will do next week. Check out the SC DMV website, it is prettty good for information:

SC Department of Motor Vehicles

You don't have to have your original birth certificate, and actually not many people do. Usually your "real" birth certificate is on file in the county you were born in, and has been put on microfilm. You do however need a "certified" copy of your birth certificate. You need original and or certified copies of everything that would ever show your name change (mostly for women ) if said woman's name is NOT the same on her SS card.
If she was born Sally Smith, but her SS card says Sally Brown because she is/was married to Mr Brown, then she has to provide original marriage certificate (in my county where I was born it's on file there) I never got the "original marriage certificate license", but rather a little fancy dancy copy and Lord knows what happened to that copy.
I had to contact my county and have a certified copy of the marriage license mailed to me.

Fax copies, are no good, the copy you get MUST have the county certification on in.

You must have your original SS card too.

Here's what was explained to me by a lawyer in SC. If it's true or not I don't know never bothered to search it out.

Sometime after September 11th, the states were supposedly given guidelines to follow for issuing identifications (including driver license) all the states but SC signed off on allowing a person moving into their state to simply turn in their old state's drivers license for the new state's one. Some require your SS card too, just to look at it, they don't find out if it's real (see NC and illegal immigration problems) It wasn't so much for illegal immigrants really, but rather terroists type issues. However, it is stemming illegals from obtaining fake documents in SC and getting licensed sometimes. A heck of a lot better than NC does.

SC however supposedly said, well not us, we want all original certified copies of everything that as been an event in your entire life, including birth, marriage, divorce, adoption papers...Rather intrusive sometimes if you asked me.

However, SC is doing it because of so many "fake documents" anymore.
So many fake driver licenses and so many fake SS cards. It's a pain, but if this is true like what the lawyer explained to me, then kudo's for SC for stepping up and checking people out.

And if this info wasn't true, it sure sounded good
