Default Hunting South Carolina

I'm new to SC from Wyoming and am a bit unsure of the deer hunting situation. In WY you can basically hunt anywhere. I've been to the SC DNR website and it seems that there are limited hunting areas (shaded green on the maps). Anyone have any suggestions, comments, etc. that could help me out? Do a lot of people hunt deer? Mostly I'd like a quick overview of the hunting situation in SC.

Thanks

Virginia has a lot more public hunting areas. I pay to hunt on private land in NC and SC.

The deer down here are tiny, i'll tell you that much! Nothing like the deer in Northern Ohio.

Folks do hunt deer but I don't think anymore than boar, wild turkey, quail etc. Like pace setter said, many people joing private clubs to hunt on private land. I know I have seen a few in Williamsburg county.

You'll definitely want to check out the very rural Calhoun Falls area, where lots of hunting takes place. Hunting has always been very popular among the locals in rural parts of the Upstate, especially north and west of the Greenville metro area.

I'm not a big hunter, but that's by far the #1 pastime around where I'm from (Sumter). Quail, dove, turkey, hog, deer, boar, duck, bear, raccoon, etc.

So, yes, deer hunting is big. I'm not sure what you mean by "In Wyoming you can basically hunt anywhere." I wouldn't try that here, you'd end up trespassing. Most people hunt on private land, either that they own personally, or that is owned by a hunting club that they are a member of.

There is some state-owned public hunting land. I've never hunted on it, but I hear bad things.

Very little private land compared to public (BLM) land.

It's true - you can't just hunt anywhere here. There are some good hunting clubs but if you want to find the best, you will have to look in the country areas. Most charge a fee. But the positive is the deer here. We have some beautiful deer here.

I have some 10 pointers that just graze in my yard at night.

Default Did you find a place?

I just moved here from Montana and am wondering the same thing. Did you have any success finding places? I'm looking to hunt hogs as well.

I know when I drive up Rte 521 through Williamsburg county I see many signs for hunting clubs, such as Kellahan Hunt Club. I'm sure if you call some of the local gun shops they could direct you better.
