Don't know about you guys, but I'm kind of getting sick of the stupid things that happen in SC that make our state look backward. There was the Miss Teen America "such as Iraq" episode.....Sanford AWOL and in South America......Joe Wilson and "you lie"......the elementary teacher recently who would have students rub her feet in class.....on and on. Now this.....seems the capital city has decided you'll get ticketed if you use cuss words. If the link doesn't work, just paste it into google and search.....it will work then.

Back in the 70's I lived in a mid-west college town where the Mayor and City Council had issues with pornography. One evening they mobilized the entire police force to raid adult book stores, newsstands, movie theaters, any where there might be porno.

That same evening there were several molestations reported about the campus area, holdups, muggings, and various other crime in the city while the entire police force was salivating over the porno.

Finally the city woke up and got rid of that mayor and most council members.

I can hear a policeman now saying to some kid...what the F are you doing here...the kid responds having a fun F'n time...LOL

Someone at USC tail gate party saying them Georgia Bulldogs can kiss my SC a$$...yea..ticket him or high five him....LOL

Also do not forget the SC guy that likes to have sex with horses nor the fight to get the Confederate flag off the state house nor the statue to Tillmann on the state house grounds....talk about looking wierd, backwards, racist.......

The Columbia Police Department is getting crime under control under the new police chief's administration. I'm not sure why the article mentioned cursing within city limits when all we're talking about are signs in city parks that any city park should have. Studies show that where there's a lot of litter there's more crime. Cursing is air wave pollution (air litter).

From what I read it seemed like this is in response to young men who are playing basketball in a public park that have a tendency to cuss loud and often. Apparently (and rightfully so) nearby residents don't enjoy this going on within earshot of their homes.

Too bad that we have to have a law to address what should be handled through common courtesy.

'No profanity' signs in public parks are nothing new. I guess a city enforces whatever rules it posts in its parks.

Yeah.. you probably have families with kids avoiding City parks because of foul language so its probably just another tool for the police to have to remove rowdy or bad elements from parks..

I can imagine in most places if I were to stand in the street and curse...aloud even if its not at anyone.. that you would be removed by the police at some point..more so a question of when.. Some cities may do it quicker than others..... "public nuisance" or "disorderly conduct" charge would likely follow not to mention they may run you up to the psych ward....

I think you're reading more into this than it really is. They are not talking about giving tickets to a couple of young men walking down the street saying GD this or GD that. They have a problem with between 8 and 20 young men on a basketball court screaming at the top of their lungs "In your Mo Fo face" and other vulgar phrases for hours at a time. The affected homeowners have no escape from the verbal barrage, the basketball court does not move.

It is sad they have to enforce it under a "no cussing" law. You would think disorderly conduct would be more applicable.

Yeah its probably because if you yell "IN YO FACE" at the top of your lungs on a basketball court.. people may not like it but is in a Park and thats why people go to parks it for recreation.. We all have heard little kids squealing 'weeeee' as they slide down the sliding board and the like. Now if you are cursing and being obscene.. thats the wedge that then allows the police to intervene and approach the group. No doubt a fine would be levied and/or the violator asked to leave as opposed to being locked up...Could you imagine.... "yo, what are you in here for? fightin, dealin, robbin?" the other says... "No Cussin"

I guess Columbia is more progressive than most thought.. we are well on our way to becoming the "San Angelos" in the movie Demolition Man..

Police aren't going to be patrolling parks looking for people cursing. If someone has had enough, they can call the police and tell them where it is occurring and the police can take it from there. No need to look for backwardness where backwardness doesn't exist. If anything this is a proactive move.

A couple of additional thoughts on why this thread is an embarassment for SC

1. Knowledge.....for the most part, city police are paid by the city. Not sure why a Greenville poster claims that his tax dollars are at work. With the exception of some federal grants for specific programs, the salaries are paid by the city.
2. Priority......police have different priorities for different calls. If CPD gets a call for something more interesting that policing the parks, they will respond. CMPD, the largest police department in the Carolinas, does the same thing here is Charlotte.
3. Perspective.....this entire thread is written by a serial poster who bashes Columbia. Outside of a couple of state news stories, policing language close to neighbors is the least of SC's worries nationwide. Also is worth mentioning that students at any high school or college from any demographic use foul language. It is a sad reflection on society which includes Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, Charlotte etc........sad that every city has to put up with foul language.
