Smoking in South Carolina
Is smoking allowed in public buildings? I honestly am not an anti-smoker. I feel if people want to poison their own bodies, they should be able to do whatever they want. However, I can't breath if I'm even 10 feet away from a smoker.
I never thought of this until today and I've had my heart set on moving to SC. If I got a job where people smoked inside the office or store, I would get very sick. This has happened to me in the past. I stopped going out when I moved to FL until they banned smoking in restaurants. I don't know why I never asked this question before.
Please don't post answers that criticize me for my reaction to smoke. This is not a political question. I just want to know what the current law is in the State.
Thank you.

I have a lot of distaste for cigarette smoke and, outside of bars and some restaurants, you should be ok. Some municipalities have banned smoking in restaurants, though I think these laws are waiting for a lawsuit to run its course before they go into effect.

In the area or town called Surf Side Beach they have put no smoking into effect.
Most or many restaurants have smoking sections, but no more in Surfside.
I believe they area working on smoking bans on the beaches too.
Undoubtedly it will spread to all areas in SC eventually just as in other cities and towns in the U.S.
I ,like so many other smokers, find it really hard to stop and since it has been proven to be just as hazardous as Asbestos I can't understand why the Government has not Baned it's manufacture.
The tax money collected by the State and federal Government is the only possible reason.
I am now on Social Security and the Government would love for me to drop dead, so they can save the monthly payments and Medicare.
SC gets a lot of money from the cigarette companies because so many are made here in the south.
With the Governments help along with the chemical companies they most certainly could come up with a drug that makes you not desire a cigarette, but look at the money that would be lost. From the farmers to he employees at plants to the Government employees that oversee it's taxing.
Big money losses.
Maybe someday, but not in the foreseeable future.
Most restaurants though have well ventilated areas, segregated where they put us no good folks.
They put US where they used to put black folks. In the back.
Look ma, I'm a discriminated against minority.

Charleston's gone smoke-free. It'll be awhile until it's actually that way in 100% of the businesses, but its certainly a noticeable improvement when going out.

Smoking isn't allowed in businesses, offices, and places like that (although I am not sure if it is law) but there are still restaurants and bars that still allow smoking. I figure if most of Europe can do it (there are so many more smokers there per capita than in the US), SC can do it! It shouldn't be long!
