The state's position slipped from 2010 to 2011. It was number 15 in rate of growth and number 13 in number of people gained, adding 53,866 people. For comparison's sake, from 2009 to 2010 it gained 64,122.

Another way of looking at it, though, is that the state is number 24 in population but number 13 in population gain from 2010 to 2011.

Why would SC want to gain more population? We have enough already.

Of course, if you're in the real estate biz more people would be positive for you.

It wouldn't be that way with smart planning. Cities (and towns that are able to reinvent themselves) will rule again in the future. Why not here?

Another measure of growth to look at is in-migration from other states. According to the Census data, SC is still in the top 5 (I believe) in that category, although it doesn't attract as many people from outside the U.S. as neighboring states.

If they bring the ability to generate jobs with them, fantastic. I haven't looked at the demographics but I'm assuming that the in-migration is probably more retirees fleeing higher taxes and colder weather. Again, in that case, no harm/no foul. With our high unemployment rate, however, I'd hope to see our existing population put back to work before more in-migration of folks seeing professional positions. Then again, what I would hope for has absolutely zilch to do with it because we live in the land of the free and the brave. People can move wherever they like and apply for any position they like. It's just ironic that SC has been the butt of so many cultural jokes and stereotypes for decades and now people from across the country are moving here in droves.
