We are considering Summerville as a retirement location, moving from Southern California. My sister lived in Goose Creek several years ago and recommended Summerville. She also mentioned some damage from Hugo and I was wondering if anyone remembered the impact of Hugo on Summerville and if Hurricane/flood insurance is required/recommended.

The Summerville area gets tropical systems nearly every summer with a little rain and wind, but has not been hit by any major hurricane recently, but historically has been hit in the past because of its proximatey to the Atlantic Ocean. Hope I could help!

Hurricane Hugo was a really bad hurricane. We live just South of Charlotte, N. C. and experienced 100 mph winds. It continued Northwest and took down trees in the North Carolina mountains. I have experienced just two hurricanes. One was Hazel in about 1954 and the other was Hugo in 1989. I would be more concerned with the summer heat in the South Carolina low country. We visited Edisto Island in early August one year and I had to stay inside with the air conditioning because the heat index was 115. The real temperature was in the low 100's.

You might want to make sure you get earthquake insurance in the Summerville area.

Hugo had winds of about 140 mph when it hit Charleston so if your relative only got some damage, that would be lucky.
