Smile My Family and I are moving to South Carolina

My family and I are planning to move to south carolina as soon as our home sales here in south florida. I was born in Lacaster, but was raised in South Florida, but Im really afraid I'm not going to adjust to the change very well.

We are looking for a home out in the country with acreage but yet not too far from the city. Most of my family live in the york, rock hill, and fort mill area. We are also looking for good schools, as one child will be in the 6th grade (hopefully) and the other in the 9th. I was condisdering the greenville -spartanburg area, as well as chester or fort lawn.

Does anyone have any opinions?

Any information provided would be helpful

we lived in greenville for 3 years and didn't like the cold winters..I say cold i mean below 40 degrees...i live in tampa. greenville rolls up the sidewalks after 9pm and the churches decide if the stores are gonna be open on sunday if xmas is on a monday! you're in for culture shock! ha ha. I really did like the area though plenty to do in the mountains the lakes are simply beautiful and clean. what is it about tampa beaches being so dirty? lakes also. I guess it's a southern thing...I never did litter when I grew up in the south and then we moved here and see folks throwing garbage out the windows!
You are gonna be able to buy a friggin mansion with what you sell you house for in florida. We sold our house in greenville for 172 4 years ago and it was a 2 and half story mill house with 2500 sq ft and had great character! Man, i miss that house. hardwood floors, solid wood doors, all brick, bad house!
Back when we lived in g'ville, fort mill was the shizzy. you will be able to find acreage without problems...I think you'll just have problems adjusting to the southern folks. Just don't get mad if they ask you "How was yore weekend, partner?"

We just relocated to Greenville in November from Ohio and we absoulutely love it!! The people here are some of the friendliest you will meet. The only thing I have to complain about is the way people drive. The get in no hurry to do anything but when they get in their cars they are like maniacs. The weather is almost perfect, yes we do get some "chilly" days but what is nice is that you get a hint of all four seasons. Rarely does it snow, but you get the chill of winter on a few days. The shopping is wonderful. If you can't find something in Greenville then you probably won't find it anywhere. It is an extremely family friendly town. On any given day you can go walk downtown and see children of all ages just hanging out with their parents. That is very rare these days. I can refer you to the realtor we used she was an absolute god send in helping us to find an area and home to suit our needs. I was also a realtor in Ohio so I know the benefit of a good realtor, who will treat you as a friend or family. Her name is Pam Granville. She has a website REMOVED just let her know Amber gave you her name and she will take care of anything you could possibly want to know. Good luck and hope you enjoy this wonderful area!!

hello,

I just sort of stumbled onto this forum. I am a native Californian, who has lived in Florida (and I hated it, sorry- it was Jacksonville). Being an LA native has made me pretty picky about where I live. In 1996 my husband and I came to Charleston for my in-law's 50th anniv. I hated the N. Chas area, but when we went sight-seeing and saw Charleston (proper) and Summeville, I just fell in love with it. We moved here in 1999 and we live in Summerville. We moved primarily for economic reasons- we live on one income, I am on disability, but I started to thrive on the low-stress atmosphere here, and I don't think I could ever go back to CA, even though I love it. I have never been to Greenville; but if you want to be near the ocean (about 23 miles away) but still be in an area to buy acreage, Summerville or Knightsville are good ideas. Kinightsville is adjacent to S'ville. I have never lived far from the ocean, so I don't think I would adjust that well too far inland. We have friends in Rock Hill, have been there once. Seems to be a sleepy little community, nice and clean. I would go onto city-data.com, or just Google and type in the name of the city and state you are looking into, and there will be a site where you can get data on crime, economy, etc. Stay away from N. Charleston. W.Ashley is nice, but it reminds me too much of the CA traffic- Mt. Pleasant is nice- somebody here mentioned Hanahan- I wouldn't live there- too close to N. Chas. O ther places we've been to and liked were VA, especially the Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Appomattox area, and Blacksburg.

_Karen

Helix, how long ago did you live in Greenville? Must have been ages ago. It's nothing like you describe. Actually, if you meet someone new here now, they are most likely to be from up North or out West or maybe from a Foreign Country. And it's wonderful to know them as friends. Occasionally you might meet a Southerner like yourself, but for the most part we have no problems with sharing our cultures and our lives with anyone. By the way,our stores are open on Sundays and I've never said Pardner in my life.
It's a great place to live!!! The people are warm and friendly and we have one of the lowest crime rates in the country. Sheila, you would love it here.

I live in the Fort Mill area (which is growing rapidly). It is a great area, with really good schools. Pretty much anything, anywhere close to Charlotte is exploding with growth. Rock Hill sits to the south of us is and is a lot larger in size and population. One spot you might be interested in is Clover, SC.

Although corporal punishment is legal in South Carolina and North Carolina there are several school districts/counties in both states that do not allow it. For instance Fort Mill School District in South Carolina does not allow corporal punishment. If you check the website of WSOCTV there is a county by county listing of schools in both states that do not allow it.

Default Any Info or comments regarding EDGEMOOR, S.C.

Thank you all for your comments and insight. I just came back from visiting my mom in Rock Hill South Carolina... and my family and I truly didnt want to return to Florida. We checked out a few homes in the york area and rock hill area. It's so beautiful there. (The traffic was wonderful)

We also looked around the EDGEMOOR area....does anyone have any advice or comments about this area and the schools. I was told the schools are Lewisville.

As far as the corporal punishment ... I will check into it.

Thanks again to all those that commented.
