I'm in college and I'm going to graduate next year. I'm considering moving to South Carolina because I live in a cold area.

I've already visited the Beaufort/Bluffton area and it was okay but I don't think I could see myself living there.

I'm looking for:

a fairly liberal town
mid to small population
younger people
decent education system (I'm going to be an elementary teacher)

I've looked at Mount Pleasant and that seems really nice but it also looks like it would be expensive (in terms of housing/apartment costs). Columbia looks nice but I would rather not live in a city - just close to one.

Any thoughts?

Of course I'm biased because I live in Greenville, but you may want to look in the Greenville area. There are some nice small towns around such as Fountain Inn, Greer, Easley, and Grenville has a great climate where you actually experience 4 seasons without extreme temps that last for long periods of time.

Summerville is another are near Charleston to consider. Seems like a nice place, people generally have good things to say about it, and it's less expensive than Mt. Pleasant.

Lexington and Irmo are places near Columbia to consider, though (like Summerville) they are very "suburban" in feel, not sure how well a younger person would fit in among mostly families.

Thanks! I've actually heard of Greenville before but not Summerville. I'll have to look into that! (Besides, who wouldn't want to live somewhere called - 'summerville'? haha)

Near Charleston, my favorite town is Mt. Pleasant. This is a very upbeat place. All the stores are nestled into the woods and palms. Mt. Pleasant is very close to the ocean by heading out to Isle of Palms. IOP being the cutest little shore town ever! You get the best of all worlds living in Mt. Pleasant. Great Shopping, closeness to Charleston, and a hop to the beach.
Shopping along cobblestone streets and nice tree lined streets.
Also you have the very best of Veterinary Specialists there in the building with that same name.
They can do all the surgery that your own vet can not perform. Such a happy-go-lucky group too.
So my pick for a town near Charleston would be Mt. Pleasant 100%

Summerville, my second choice only because of the 50 min. ride to the ocean...

Good luck on finding a "Liberal" small town in South Carolina. The Upstate may be your best bet. Even more liberal would be Asheville.

The Upstate is the most conservative part of the state. There's really no truly liberal small town in SC.

Without the Upstate then SC would be a blue/purple state

It can't get much more conservative than where I live now (Bible Belt).
