Looking for some advice on what to expect when we move to the area in July. We have 2 kids, daughter is in PreSchool and son is a 2nd Grader in the school's Scholar program. School is top on our list but we can't afford private school for both kids, so we want to know more about the public schools in the area.
I've lived in Sumter most of my life. I love this town and have no plans to leave. It isn't for everyone, especially if you come from a more urban enviroment, but it has everything you need with a small town feel. For your more "urban" needs (Entertainment, fine dining, etc...) Columbia is a short 40 minutes away. The cost of living is far below anything else you've ever seen. Your money goes very far here. I'll admit that the schools aren't the best. But what public schools are? If you must send them to public school, try very hard to live in the area around Alice Drive Elementary. Most of the nicer homes and neighborhoods are in that area. However, you would be surprised at what a quality, private school education can cost here. I also have 2 kids and both are enrolled at local private schools. I won't mention which one, but do your research. There are a few quality ones to choose from. In alphabetical order........St. Anne Catholic, Thomas Sumter Academy and Wilson Hall are the top 3 for elementary school ages. Good luck and welcome to Sumter.
