Tough question.. voluntary segregation does harm the public school system but on the other hand, I understand the other argument. Would you want to send your (white) kid to say Allendale-Fairfax?

What I can't stand, and it's purely racism with this, is there is a big push to give parents who ELECT to send their kids to a all-white private school a massive tax break from paying school taxes.. That is basically, pull public funding from the black schools and give it to the private white schools... That is racism and South Carolina once again trying to go back to the 1960's when it comes to schools.

Not a dime of tax breaks for those who send their kids to private schools.

The SC Legislators answer to the public school dilemna is tax advantages to people to send their kids to private schools.

I believe this approach to be head in the sand, shoot the messenger, and a racist approach.

Just what the poorer people that can not afford better need. Tax breaks. Give me a break people.

Racism is everywhere. I've visited large Northern cities, and they are as bad or worse than here. I've seen it here. BUT...I can also say it's very isolated to a few people. Charleston is a very diverse city. I see all the races party together, work together, etc, etc, and until someone actually brings up racism, it seems to not even be a concious thought. At least in my circle of friends and hangouts. Of course, like anywhere, the NAACP will march when a cop shoots a black kid (regardless of it being legit or not). People will equate immigration enforcement to racism. And race will be used as a "card".

I think humans are just mammals, who like other animals, are tribal or herd-like. We group ourselves. It's why we are fanatical about sports. And patriotic. And why we put dumb stickers on the back of our car windows to identify ourselves with group or cause. SO....some will use skin color as just another tribe or herd or group to divide us.

Next, YES, the South is VERY VERY unfairly stereotyped. Not because racism doesn't exist, but because the fact that it exists everywhere but only the South seems to carry the label. History is the main reason. But, for example, when Hollywood needs a good racism joke for a movie, they implant a Southern character or a scene shot somewhere in the South (or made to look that way).

My personal feeling is that the South, better than anywhere else, has BETTER race relations. Why? We were forced to lived next to each other and integrate decades ago, and we had to face up to those issues, deal with them, accept them, move on beyond them, and now have raised a couple generations of children who dont harbor any of those feelings of the past (until someone like Jesse Jackson is on CNN telling them they should feel afraid and victimized). The generations of families down here have been through that gauntlet and moved beyond it. Now, imo, 99% of the people in the South live their daily lives with race not even being a thought. I simply dont think places like California, New York, etc, have gone through that experience, and many of those "tribal" race feelings still haven't been dealt with.

With all that said, let me end it on a humorous note (and I'm the brother of a cop and support LE, so dont take this wrong). A joke: How many cops does it take to change a light bulb? None. They just beat the room for being black.

Hey, lighten up everybody. Unnecessary anger fuels this crap anyway.
Agree 100%.

Do you feel racism is still big in your state? Do you feel that people stereotype the "south " as racist? Are there places you feel like a Mexican or Black or even a White man isn't welcomed.

Thank you all for your time. We are from Ohio and when we think of the south this is among the top 5 things we associate with it. We know there is racism everywhere.
Anyone that thinks there is no racism in America needs to go play Call of Duty online for about 15 minutes.

Anyone with an open mind understand that we have more racist black people than white people these days. I abhor all racism, but while blacks get the pass, white's pay the price.

Over my many years, the 2 most racist people I ever met were:
An Uncle from NY who told me on a visit one time that there was no way he could live down here with all the n_____s! Up North, we know how to keep 'em seperate.

A business associate from Michigan who asked while on a visit here "How do you handle all these n_____s down here? We never have to mix with them back home.

It had never really occured to me before then that people were so filled with hate.

Exactly! The South gets a bum rap on racism. The North is just as racists as any other part of the country.

I also associate the south with racism, even though I know it is everywhere. Some people, usually the smarter ones, have learned to hide it better, while the more ignorant are still blatant about it. I think I like my racists to be open about how they feel because the people who hide it are not only racist, but liars and sneaks as well.

I am house hunting in the south to be nearer to my adult children. I am looking for an area with tidy yards and well kept houses and a diversity of races because that is evidence,to me, of racial harmony. I don't believe that to be possible with an area that is all black or all white. Am I looking for Utopia? Maybe...maybe not. I have a feeling there are areas where there are 'people' instead of 'blacks or whites' in existence, I just have to look harder.

Input? Suggestions? Dire warnings?

How ironic!
I grew up in Milwaukee and moved to South Florida 16 years ago and want out.
I was considering moving back to Milwaukee, but after some research, learned the racial tensions there are out of control.
So I came to see what the people in SC had to say.. and it sure seems racism is worse in the north.. or at least the midwest... such a shame and so out dated!

Do you mean like how you stereotyped it ^ ?

I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to hear the other 4 bigoted labels.
