HHI/Pawleys or Bust?
We're having a family vacation next summer in S.C. Right now we're trying to decide between Pawleys Island and HHI. I've never been to either. I'm looking for a nice oceanfront home with five bedrooms where we can hang out, go crabbing, but still be able to go out at night if we want. Can anyone tell me the big differences btwn Pawleys and HHI? What's the big draw to HHI? We were told to go to Palmetto something..Aunt's realtor said she wouldn't vacation anywhere but HHI and was crazy to contemplate anythin else. Opinions much appreciated.

There is a huge difference between Pawleys & HHI, mainly that Pawleys is a small town and is about 20 minutes to the resort-ish attractions of Myrtle Beach/Surfside. There are plenty of fine restaurants, the beaches are superb and you cannot find a more relaxing atmosphere. As far as nightlife, there are a couple of bars that have live music but nothing very exciting for the 20-30 somethings. You would have to travel to Myrtle Beach for the clubs. Pawleys Island Realty & Lachicotte have the lion's share of summer rentals..... Crabbing, kayaking, shell hunting, shopping (lots of neat boutiques) are all on the top of the to-do list!
I've only been to HHI a couple of times and it was much bigger than I anticipated. It gets quite crowded during the summer months but there are more things to do at night, for sure. I don't think it is as intimate as Pawleys but there may a little corner tucked away that I don't know about.

I would seriously question the opinions of your Aunt's realtor. Personally, I'd rather stay at Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Sullivans Island, or Edisto Beach long before I'd go to Hilton Head.
For me, the only reason I'd choose HHI is for golf and tennis, or unless you simply must stay in a gated community.

Try Palweys Island. It is BEAUTIFUL, SAFE, and not too far from the Myrtle Beach area. I can get there from here in less than 30 min. There are a few great places for night life here as well such as the PIT (Pawleys Island Tavern). Give it a shot, it is a great place to live and vacation and you will be amazed at the beautiful beaches, wonderful shops, and great places to eat.

I like Pawley's better all day long. I used to live in HHI so I'll admit I'm biased. I never liked HHI. Overcrowded and to commercial. Sea Pines is really nice but pricey. If you go to HHI, I'd recommend staying in Sea Pines and book through Sea Pines rather than a private owner to make sure you have access to all the amenities.
Me, I like Pawley's because it's quiet and old fashioned to a degree. Reminds of the beach when I was kid.

I agree. Pawleys is a nice place. It's a small area and very family oriented. Plus, you have the added bonus of the ocean/creek area in the summertime.
