I can tell you lots of good things about Columbia. I moved here from New Jersey a number of years ago and love it. There's lots to do here, both indoors and outdoors, we have a large college population and a wealth of the arts. Columbia is less than 2 hours from either the beach or the mountains and it is a very inclusive community. Here are some photos if you'd like a tour:

Both my neighbors on either side of my house are from out of state, one from Michigan, one from Florida. They are BOTH looking to get out, too! It appears that many ppl move here from other areas for a couple of years, like it for a while, and then realize South Carolina isn't what they imagined!! The schools are the worst, crime is rampant, and the weather isn't that much better. This past summer was H-O-T. The winter is bitter and cold (and I'm from Illinois!). Not only that, but everyone around here is still STUCK in the Civil War. What's up w/ THAT???

South Carolina is a GREAT place to vacation, see the sights, go to the beach. Living here.....not so great. We are sooooo outta here!!!!
dude... it sounds like you did not do your homework before you moved to SC. Check comparative costs of living, industry and trends, contact the local chamber of commerce or check stats online. Visit first. Check employment rates... culture, etc. Of course it's HOT! It's South Carolina! Only hell is hotter. hahahaha Do you really think it is fair to slam SC when you may not have done all of your homework in the beginning?

hi, I am a single mom with 2 kids, one is in her 2 year in college. I would like to move to south carolina, but don't know where. i am in the health proffesion. would like to move to an area where is not to far from a hospital also close to a good colllege, where the crime rate is very low, but is a good area. Not looking for a very expensive one, but nice and decent area because I have a 5 year old kid who has a speech problem and would like to know if school supplies speech therapist.

Only thing I want to comment on is the weather....I think to summarize the entire state as H O T would be a mistake...The state is too large and has too many geographic features to be catogorized that way. You can just google any town in SC and get a weather history right down to the pct. of tornado activity..
Certainly, the eastern peidmont could be described as being the hottest and highest humidity during the summer months. The Blue ridge upstate cannot compare, its physically impossible due to altitude. Of course along the coastal plain there is no way the humidity can build like it does 20 or so miles inland. (not that it cant get hot!!) I could never relocate to SC and live in the lowlands midstate..it would literally kill me. Same as central FLA. Not to pick on the original post for this thread, but ya gotta look into the area before ya relocate!!
Hey even the tiny state I live in now (Ct) has micro climates..Im up in the NW hill country. Snow can happen from late Oct, builds up in Dec.. accumulates unruly right thru mid march and tends to be seen right into April. Have seen 5" snowfalls as late as May 10th!!
25 miles south in Danbury???? Only 1/3 the entire snowfall total, temps daily almost 10 deg warmer on avg...

Just like anywhere some people are going to love it and some people are going to hate it and the majority will be somewhere in between.

I have to comment on a few things though:

Schools - yes we have some very bad school districts but we also have the best of the best. The Gates Foundation picked two high schools in SC that they thought were exceptional and that they thought other schools should model. This was out of a total of 30 high schools picked from the entire country! This is actual very typical of many states. Some school districts are very, very good and some not so much. Until that equalizes, it is up to YOU to do your research if this is a priority for you.

Crime - again, this varies from region to region as with most states

Bible thumping - Umm, i've never come across anyone that has tried to bible thump me. My parents immigrated here from the UK and have never had any issues. Yes there are some very religious people but they are everywhere as well, not just in the south.

the weather - are you insane? sure it gets cold but there aren't many places that have actual seasons (which many, many people want - sorry if you are not one of them) and where you can also have 70 degree weather in Jan and Feb. I've had countless northerners tell me we have the most gorgeous spring they have ever seen and it starts in March!!

Sorry you didn't like it here but it sounds like you didn't do your research. More and more people are moving here from all over the country and they LOVE it here.
