So you thought your were going to lower your cost of living by moving to SC, but still make the same size paycheck????????? Sounds like you made an impulse decision and did not properely research the area prior to your relocation. I wish you and your family the best of luck, but I would hesitate to slam the entire south based on your bad experience.

My wife and I want to locate down south she does not like the cold. I was born and raised in Ohio and my wife was born and Mississippi but raised all over. I hope that when we make our move that we will be accepted by the new community. I as a northerner and her as a born Southerner.

Hi, I'm originally from West Virginia and currently living in Orlando. I've been in Orlando now for just over 2 years and work as an interior designer. I'm looking to move to South Carolina within the next year. Currently I'm looking around Myrtle Beach and Charleston areas. I have 2 questions: how are these 2 areas for living, and how hard is it to find an interior design job?

Big Mistake?

Brev, what do they have for beaches in the Columbia area? I don't know a lot about the area except it's inland, is the capitol, and has three rivers running through it. We did have the opportunity to visit the Myrtle Beach area a few years ago. Such a nice and friendly place.

What constitutes a big mistake is coming into any area and expecting it to be just like where you came from-- people move for reasons- if they liked where they were or if they could make a living there or totlerate the taxes/crime- they would have stayed where they came from--
GRANTED Orangeburg is not New York--- and for that we are glad--
as to being back in the 60's ..... I guess what you value from the life God has given you will dicatate how that affects your life.
Welcome to Orangeburg-- or South Carrolina for that part!!

I'm from Long Island, New York and we are thinking about moving to the Myrtle Beach area, does anyone have anything positive to say? Long Island is not like New York City for those of you thinking another New Yorker who will hate the South.

It doesn't matter for some native southerners. North of the Mason-Dixon line is north of the MD line. Some people actually think Buffalo is close to NYC when it is almost as far from Charlotte to nyc.

My company is relocating me to Greenville, SC in Sept. I never really had any concerns about it untill i started to read this forum. I am from the Detroit area, And can honestly say that i have been around all types of cultures. Never did i judge someone on the color of their skin or the way a person talked. I am hopeing that the "yankee" attitude i am reading about is simply untrue. Also Is it true that i have to pay a tax on my Vehicle? From what i have read it seems that because i have a brand new SUV that i will have to pay roughly a thousand dollars a year tax for it. That just dont seem right. Its almost like you get penalized for having a new car.

I haven't been in Myrtle that long but I think I died and went to heaven. I hope this feeling continues. I spent 26 years in NY not Long Island but the Bronx and Orange County. Spent the last 19 years in Phoenix. Seems like most of the people I see or hear have NY accents, especially at Kroeger in Carolina Forest

Yep it's funny my brother in-law is from Buffalo and he makes fun of the hicks from the South, says he'll never live with them. We used to think the people in Buffalo and close to the Canadian border were hicks

Don't worry too much about the "Yankee" attitude things. Based on your statement about judging people, you should do fine. You can expect some ribbing about being a "Damn Yankee", but it should be mostly good natured.
As far as the taxes goes.... Yup. That's the way it works in SC. Now if you had bought the SUV in SC, you would have only paid $300 for sales tax, that alone could have saved you several thousand dollars. One thing that can help you lower that property tax is to remember to ask about the high mileage discount. The more miles on your vehicle, the less tax you'll pay.
