Hey there Ken - first off...may I suggest you start a new tread...as I think more folks would see it that way.
Is there a particular area that you are looking for...do you like coastal, foothills, etc.,.....is their a particular amount you have in mind....do you one a one story/ranch style...or would you prefer multi-story?...any and all of those things will help in giving you some ideas on where to start looking.

Yay!
I think your disillusionment w/SC is awesome and hope it extends to the rest of the South including here in Tennessee. We're so inundated with Midwestern transplants who, like you, come on vacation and think it'd be a great place to live. Please let your fellow Midwesterners know how "awful" it is and discourage their move South as well, lol.

Cheer up. At least you don't have Hillary Clinton telling you how to live, yet.

outside looking in,
if you dont like arrogant people telling you how to live in the South boy howdy, you wont like california, oregon, washington, new york, vermont, new jersey, Pa, mass, ct RI , MN, Wisconsin and Illinois either.
The arrogance of those folk about what kind of car you should drive, how to raise your kids, where to send them to school, how to recycle, who should be president and much much more is rampant there so i dont know where you are going to live.

You are doing the same thing that you're accusing the people from those states of doing. Stereotyping and judging. I lived in NJ most of my life and there are a few people like that but most are not. There are nice people in the north and nice people in the south......just have to weed out the bad ones in your life.

Don't be so fast to leave Fla. There is a state income tax here and its higher than the publications and relocation books lead you to believe. Even as a retiree, I pay high income tax. There is a tax on everything you buy, including groceries, might even be 8% shortly. There are no deductions unless you are 65. Property taxes are rising and so is the cost to register your car. BIG DEAL, you get a break if you register a large boat with a kitchen and bathroom. Thats for the rich.

This is true but sometimes it is really better to leave and get out while you can and find a nicer place, job or home or whatever here, sometimes it does pay to do that...it really does depend here too.

Captain Ron, It gets a whole lot hotter than that! Add to the heat the high humidity levels and its pretty steamy. I still love it in sunny SC tho!

Might I ask if you researched the area before moving there? I'm going up at the end of the week and we're going to spend a week there - granted, no-where near enough time to get a real sense of the community, but at least a feel of comparison...to see how our family is received and talk with a few familiar people who previously left here for the same reasons and employer.
Gotta say, it's H-O-T everywhere this year...but slightly cooler there than it is here, so I'll take it.
I like the cold, always have. I'm the nut dancing in the front yard calling to the sky for snow when it hits 32 degrees down here. In a sweater and jacket, certainly.

33458, don't do it! We are from 33418 (just a few miles from Jupiter). As I found out online statistics are outdated and many times incorrect or even falsified. If you are already retired, you may fit in well, especially if you are from Jupiter Farms, many areas up here are similar. But the ppl are a different breed here. A brief visit had us believing that ppl here are extremely friendly, they are not all friendly. Many are just downright hostile toward outsiders, usually passively rarely outspoken. Many small towns you will find there are downright uncivilized, extremely poor and have been brought up around violence which exceeds anything you have ever seen or heard of in FL. If you are a working person, chances are that you will encounter them on a daily basis. Most of our family is retired and lives in a better neighborhood, ergo a better class of ppl and a safer neighborhood. We live in Hartsville, SC now. Its a very nice town, but - Our block is integrated and as well kept as most of town is, there are outlying stretches just surrounding our town (alike Riviera Bch was next to PBG), where it is just not safe and shootings and stabbings are common. Beware the I-95 corridor of SC. The boards seem more reliable source than gov stats. and census data. BTW - last summer was 118 here and winter nights average in the 20's, snow is uncommon in the PeeDee.
