I found this post (pasted below) from someone who had moved from Oregon to Phoenix, Arizona...and I'm wondering if anyone who lives in Hilton Head, and especially moved to Hilton Head (or the area) from the North east feels this way....

here it is...

quote...There is a "condition" where I'm from (Oregon). I don't recall the clinical name but it's a form of depression from lack of sunshine. It's a vitamin deficiancy and I always thought that was a bunch of crap until I moved here. I'm far more cheerful here. It's not just that I'm happy to be living here, it's more than that. It's more like a "happy to be alive" kind of thing. I now firmly believe that lack of sunshine does make a person less happy. Too weird....end quote

It's called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) due to lack of natural sunlight. It supposedly causes depression, mood swings, irritability, lethargy, cravings for sweet foods and a general feeling of being ‘down in the dumps’. Therapist offer light therapy to patients with SAD.

I don't think our coastal area would pose that problem and I am sure Arizona and Florida, The Sunshine State, wouldn't either.

I have a friend with SAD. She handles it well with the light therapy.

Hi. Oh, actually I knew about SAD, but I was looking actually for a more holistic feeling...ie., if someone moved to the Hilton Head area from any other place (especially somewhere with cold winters)...do you just wake up everyday with a smile because you are living in "almost paradise?"

Hi Suzsaz,
I don't know if the sunshine is what makes HHI so wonderful, I think it is the combination of the warm weather, amazingly beautiful plants, the wind in the palms, the sunshine on the water...water, water everywhere! There are so many opportunities to relax (really relax and let your shoulders drop!) and stare out over a beautiful water view and get lost in your thoughts. There are miles of bike trails, beaches and lagoons. A nature lovers dream. Then go out for an awesome meal after! Life here is amazing--now the shopping is less than perfect--but a trip to Savannah can help that!
I am so thankful that I get to live here.
We grew up in Michigan and got used to the grey skies and I will say that no sunshine will get you depressed!

Heyflipfloppers. Now that's what I want to hear! Can't wait to trade our North East gray skies for the low country next year!

My mom moved from PA to Hilton head and she absolutely loves it. Beach is never far, bike lanes everywhere, warm winters, ocean breeze, beautiful surroundings. She ill never leave. I love visiting and might consider moving there in the future.
