Thanks Waccamatt-- I tried to rep you but it wouldn't let me??
Since it is the end of May, I'm assuming it is ok to fertilize now and again in August per your post. I will go to Lowe's and see if they have any Palm fertilizer. Thanks for the points.

Thanks Geechie.....you are always soooo helpful. This is a mother load of excellent information. My palms look a little brown and I have a dead frond or two but I think if I start working on them now I may be able to save them. I really appreciate this link!!!

i found a place in florence that you can by palms from and they will come and deliver and plant it and guarantee them for a year as long as you follow the directions they give you for caring for them.

I am considering a Canary Island Date Palm or two for my front yard. I know they would be real chancy as far as survival in Columbia, but I think if I buy large trees and plant them in early spring they will be well established by winter and their size should protect them. I have never seen a CADP in Columbia, but someone has to be the first - right? I think they are gorgeous trees with a commanding presence.

Cool choice, Waccamatt. I had to look it up to see what you were talking about. I met with a landscaper today who said that my Palmetto (Sabal) palms had gotten too cold during the winter but that they will survive. I just have to go up and trip the fronds back and check for new growth. Palms are little beasties to keep alive but gee, they are sooooo cool. I still have one ground palm I'm trying to identify.....I'll go back over the website that geechie was kind enough to send me and see what I can identify. Keep us posted with some pics if you get your palms.

Hey JFR.....yeah, I posted the pic so we could see what waccamatt was talking about. It looks really cool. Let us know what you wind up with..... looks like my two varieties here in Greenwood are Palmetto and Pindo. I'm doing my best to geta routine going so that they will survive here. Like everyone says, it gets kind of cold this far in-land for them but I'm going to give it my best!

This is what they look like when larger. I think one on each side of the yard would be cool, though I know they'll be expensive. Their cold-hardiness is similar to that of Mexican Fan Palms and I have 2 of them in my backyard so I think I could get a Canary Island Date Palm to survive.
