Default Grand Strand Hospital: Maternity/Childbirth?

I'm relocating to the area, and am just beginning my last trimester of pregnancy- it's the way it worked out with my husband's job, we couldn't get there before, and we thought we'd be unable to get there any time soon, then poof, he HAS to go there with little notice. So I need to transfer my care to one of the 2 hospitals I'll be living exactly halfway between, one of which is Grand Strand hospital (the other one's New Hanover in Wilmington NC).

It's just as close for me to shoot down to SC and get to Grand Strand hospital. I would like to go to the hospital that is most convenient for me but I don't know much about Grand Strand Hospital anymore. How is their maternity staff? I am sort of afraid to plan to use them, not knowing as much about them, even if I go visit the hospital beforehand, since I don't know their reputation. I'm much more familiar with Wilmington but think it would be more convenient in my case to go to Grand Strand. I think they handle about 1500 deliveries per year as opposed to at least twice as many at NH--so this could be good because they're not as slammed busy, or it could be bad in that they lack experience and a NICU...

Any experiences with giving birth at Grand Strand? Do you know people who have, etc? Have they had any problems?

I don't know about Grand Strand hospital but I can tell you I had surgury last year at New Hanover hospital and I thought I was queen for a day!!!!. Everyone was FANTASTIC and attentive. I highly recommend that hospital!!!! In fact I need one more surgury on my ankle and although I live in Myrtle Beach I will go back to my doctor in Wilmington and New Hanover hospital.

This is one area that I know little about for GSH. I had my last child at Conway Hospital.

Good luck!

Thanks sheena, that at least reconfirms what I've already heard...I ask about Grand Strand as well as the hospital in Brunswick County, and people keep telling me to go to New Hanover.

But, no one really has anything bad to say about the other 2, they just deal with New Hanover. I probably will too, just so as not to take any chances. My only problem with it is I'd hate to know I have to be 45 minutes away from the hospital and doctor's appointments (I'm starting my last trimester!), when the hospital that's easier to get to would have been good too.

My husband, who has family who have lived in Brunswick Co for generations, says Grand Strand hospital is supposed to be pretty good but he doesn't know about maternity, and New Hanover is supposed to be excellent. It's hard to choose....I'll have to visit but that still won't tell me anything until I'm in labor, during which I'll be "Yay, this is going well" or "Oh why didn't I go to _____!"
