I don't live there, but Hilton Head is a resort/retirement area and really expensive. Beauford is a really good alternative. Very nice town. It's home to Paris Island Marine base. Don't know anything about Bluffton. The summers are very hot, humid, and prone to hurricanes. If those things are not an issue for you, I'd recommend it.

My brother moved to Bluffton 4 years ago from Atlanta. He works from home and is almost done building a house on the island. There are a surprising lot of young families living in the area - many of whom work in the tourism industry (resorts, gold courses, etc.) or in civilian support of the military. The crime rate is low, but I can't comment on the schools - their oldest starts next year and will be going to a Catholic school. They have a great time there - they're a very active family and find a lot to do, even without considering all the beach and water-related activities. It can also be a very relaxing area - if you like the feel of being near the beach. It's a short drive to Savannah or to Beaufort, so there are lots of options for day trips. The winters are mild - in the 40s, generally. It's hot and muggy in the summer, but the ocean provides a nice breeze to help with that. As mentioned, it's pretty expensive, even off island. And most everyone is required to have both flood and hurricane insurance, as I understand. But in the 4 years my brother has been out there, he hasn't had to evacuate once. I've had more hurricane activity up here in Charlotte!
