I'm in the process of doing my taxes and I was asked to enter my IRS Notice CP01A Identity Protection PIN. It was supposed to have been sent out last December?

I did get the letter a couple of weeks ago telling me that my identity has been compromised but never got a PIN number.

Did any of you? If so, did it come in the mail or was it an email?

Thanks.

We got the letter saying our identity had been compromised a couple of days ago... But no PIN. I didn't even know we were supposed to have one.

Understanding your CP01A Notice

In mid-December, we issue CP01A notices containing a 6-digit IP PIN and instructions on how to use it. We send this notice to taxpayers meeting the following criteria:
  • You reported to us that you are a victim of identity theft,
  • We identified you as a victim of identity theft, or
  • You participated in our 2014 IP PIN pilot for residents of FL, GA or DC.

If you misplaced your IP PIN

Visit the Lost or Misplaced IP PINs page for instructions on how to recover your original IP PIN or request a replacement.

Default Cpo1a

I received my new Identity Pin Number in January, 2016. It gave me a number for Tax Year 2014 which didn't make any sense as I was looking for a number for 2015. After 55 minutes on the phone I was told that the letter was a typo and that it should have been for 2015. They told me there would be no corrections sent to taxpayers. Can you believe that?
