Were I picking for a career, raise a family, retire to, etc. I would say Charleton first, Columbia second and Greenville a close third. Columbia and Greenville could switch positions depending one ones needs but to me Charleston will always be #1.
Columbia is probably growing the fast since 2008 since it largely a government and trial lawyer kind of town which are the only industries still thriving in this economy. LOL

What is growing down there, exactly? I don't see many jobs down there for engineers but it has never been a hotbed for engineering work.
