Doesn't SC tax grocery store items? Some states don't do that, I think.
Seems like 4.29 is pretty standard for gallon of milk anywhere you go but I must confess i don't really look at price when i go to the grocery store b/c i want to get in and get out as quickly as possible.
What's going on here? SC has low taxes, low gas prices, low COL...all of these things should translate into lower grocery prices. What gives?
may i ask where you buy your milk, as i've not seen it that high in the stores i shop at. I would assume dairy is higher here then what i had back in WI, some of that makes sense on the # of dairy farms here and there. But we pay in the 3's per gallon around here anyway for milk
In the smaller towns in SC I've found items like fresh seasonal produce to be on par to waaaay less expensive than the national norms. However, prepackaged items like bread, frozen products, etc... are high. No idea why.
It depends on the areas you shop. Rural areas will have cheap produce and perhaps local products, but be expensive on most name brand items. More urban areas will have more reasonable prices over all. It also can depend on the store you shop at. In SC there is no tax on unprepared foods (grocery). You need to rethink where you shop for milk. At Walgreens you can occasionally find it for 2.99.
3.99 at Publix in Mauldin last week. When we didn't have money, I'd get milk at Sam's. At the time it was about a buck cheaper than Publix. Aldi also has cheaper milk. Walmart disappoints on price of milk. Should be closer to Sam's price but it is about the same as Publix.
I have never paid over $4.00 and have lived in the southeast for 16 years.
