Portions of this article were discussed in another thread (until some Charleston folks were offended and had the mods delete a lot of the discussion). But, since Charleston lacks a comprehensive reserch university, what are the thoughts about merging CofC and MUSC? What would be the benefit for SC? Does CofC have the resources to perform high level research? Is CofC still thinking about buying the law school?

Why does every college need to do research? College is really supposed to be about teaching students, preparing them for careers.

I doubt people outside of Charleston and even most people in Charleston care much about what CofC is doing, unless CofC wants to throw some money at them.

I agree with you on this Harrison, Swampfox, Clemsontiger............not every college needs to perform research. It is interesting that Charleston's leaders want to consolidate these schools as a third alternative to Clemson and Carolina. CofC needs to build up more financial resources before trying to take on being a larger university. Besides, I don't agree that Charleston will be materially better at attracting jobs with a comprehensive university. Charleston will be thought of as a tourist town unless they can grow themselves out of it and become a metro in the 1.5m to 2m range.....not likely in our lifetime.

However, I never knew that CofC did not award doctoral degrees.
