There are parts of the Little Pee Dee river that are beautiful. Here's a scan of an old picture that I took years ago. This is on Hwy. 378 at the Marion/Horry county line. I think the scenery is great.
**Don't get this confused with the Great Pee Dee river, or as locals call it, the Big Pee Dee. The Little has black water and is beautiful.

South Carolina is full of history trying to narrow it down I have found it impossible, but there is one town that has my heart and that is Cheraw SC. My husband and I were married there in St. David's Church, the oldest church in SC. Upon my last visit I noticed many of the historical homes for sale and they have put in a new Walmart about 1.5 miles from the historic area. Cheraw also has a State Park and is around 1.5 hours from Myrtle Beach.

My mother is from Marion, and my Grandmother still lives there. I would agree that the textile and tobacco industries have hurt their local economy, but the area isn't all gone. Roche built a fairly large pharmaceutical plant near Marion. There are other industries that are being drawn to the area because of the cheaper land and lower taxes.

If you're averse to heat, you'll probably be disapointed. Marion and much of SC would be considered hot in the summer to people that aren't used to it. The temps will be 90+ most of the summer, but the high humidity really makes it miserable. Its not unbearable, but it will take some getting used to.

Marion has a very rich history and is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Program. Like many of SC distressed communities, Marion is working to build up it's downtown through Historic Preservation and Heritage Tourism. These programs can do wonders for preserving the built enviornment especially in the downtown area. Attracting businesses is a different hurdle since the demographics don't always make since for locating businesses. That is why much of the focus for smaller historic communites is to develop their Heritage Tourism resources. The Francis Marion Trail Commission was developed to establish and promote promote Heritage Tourism in the area.
The unemployment rate in the area remains among the highest in the state of South Carolina. There are several programs underway to help retrain workers in the area and the SC Department of Commerce has special programs for distressed communities. Marion County was also recently mentioned as a site for a large regional airport due to the close proximity to Myrtle Beach according to a NESA study that confirmed the need for a regional airport in the next 20 years.
There are many historical properties in the Marion area and there are also tax credits for rehabilitating historic properties.

Default Beautiful Marion - SC - Mixed emotions

My wife and I are self employed people who relocated here from Nevada in 2002. We feel very comfortable in our 1885 Victorian home and enjoy the beauty and history of this small community. Like the original poster, the local economy does not impact our daily lives, as our business is internet related and is not dependant on one particular community or economy.

I suppose I would consider myself somewhat spoiled, coming from Las Vegas where businesses live or die by customer service, or lack thereof. I would say the most difficult thing to get use to is the lack of customer service in Marion, SC. It's not something that comes naturally for the average first level employees, whether that be at McDonald's, Food Lion (Grocery store) or the brand new Walmart.

Simple "Thank you's" are starkly missing. I feel its because courtesy from one segment of the poplulation is not instilled in them as children, and there is no need to say thank you to someone that owes you something. Just my opinion.

Aside from that, the little town of Marion has great potential for being a perfect place in the sun. The weather is mild, the geo-location gives easy access to highways, airports and resort areas.

Conversely, if I were advising a young couple, who planned to have children, or bring children with them, Marion is very disappointing when it comes the education system. We have a child in the 10th grade who is not getting the education he deserves and is affected by the gang activity and general disobedience tolerated by the city, police and school district. It's out of control! If we stay in the community, private school is the only option for the upcoming school year.

There needs to be sweeping reforms in this diamond in the rough. Start with education reform and gang enforcement. These two factors would be the catalyst for change in this community. Better teachers and administrators and enforcement of the law by local law enforcement.

Like when considering relocation anywhere in the country or world, one needs to do a certain amount of homework. There is not Utopia, or perfect place, but there are degrees of good and bad, and I suppose there must be a balance for decent people. I find the balance in Marion is slightly tilting to the overall bad.. but can teter easily to the center or "good" catagory with adjustments.

Hope this helps.

Default I-73 could be a real boost

I would hope things would be looking up for Marion. It was designated as part of the future route of Interstate I-73 that will connect the mid west to Myrtle Beach. This could be a real boost for the area, the current route takes it between Mullins and Marion (city)

I just moved from MI to Marion, SC for a teaching position...it is a HUGE culture shock...I came here with the notion that...like you... I am not bothered by racial diversity or the depressed economy...so I won't discuss that...lol. As for the town of Marion, there is very little unless you consider Super Walmart a big deal...however, the city of Florence is nearby and there is much to do there (places to shop, etc.) also Myrtle Beach is less than 50 miles away...so I guess that is something...I would honestly tell you to keep looking.
