As for pay, yes. In right wing Republican states, police and firemen are generally paid much less than they deserve. Same for ALL of the military, in any state. People who risk their lives to protect us deserve more.

by the way, the Charleston fire departmnet was criticized for not following proper procedures. From Wikipedia, some pull quotes:
