Looking for advice for someone who was licensed for independent practice as a counselor in another state, and applied for licensure in SC. Easy process? Any tough hurdles you had to jump?
I'm currently licensed for independent practice in IL and am looking to move yo SC in a few years.
I did with a social work license in the mid 90s. I called the board, asked their advice, filled out the paperwork and sent it in along with a check. Have you asked if your state has reciprocity? If so, then you shouldn't have any trouble, Do you know if the test you took was one of those mentioned in the link?
Thanks, Sue. Who do I ask about reciprocity ... SC, IL or both? I had to take the NCE for the LPC, then the NCMHCE for the LCPC so I'm in good shape there. Did you have to have your supervisor(s) from your previous state write to SC to verify your hours?
When I did it, my supervisors had to fill out a form. Reciprocity questions should go to the SC board staff.
Where will you live? Just know that there are lots of therapists in the Charleston and Myrtle Beach. If you are considering private practice, consider going in with others, or obtaining an agency job until you can get a solid referral base.
My practice was in Mt P. I did well, but I was well connected with the hospital, foster care agencies and the disabilities board before I started. I also take Miedicare, and I don't think LPCs can do that.
You'll, of course, have to get paneled which you can't do without a SC license. If you are Tricare paneled now, find out if you can transfer. There are both active military and retirees in the Charleston area.
