Florence is about 1 hour west from Mrytle Beach, right on I-95. Housing is pretty affordable here and traffic is pretty light. I don't know how you define fun and family oriented but it has a great park Timrod Park with lot of tennis courts Lot of good gyms in town too especailly McLouud Fitness Center.
Summerville might work too, outside of Charleston, it's about 30 minutes to the beach and downtown Charleston. It will be more expensive there than Florence.
