South Carolina has four in-state calling areas:
  • Charleston
  • Columbia
  • Florence (includes Myrtle Beach)
  • Greenville (includes Anderson, Greenwood, Spartanburg)
Three other calling areas cross into South Carolina:
  • Augusta, Georgia (includes Aiken)
  • Savannah, Georgia (includes Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island)
  • Charlotte, North Carolina (includes Lancaster and York counties)
While the Florence calling area is growing, I doubt it has used enough phone numbers to warrant a split area code yet. If phone numbers in area code 854 are exhausted quickly in Charleston and Hilton Head-Bluffton-Beaufort, then it would make sense to split the Florence calling area from area codes 843 and 854.

Area code 854 has not been activated yet. It will be activated in September when ten-digit calling becomes mandatory. Numbers in area code 854 would be assigned at that time.
