Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read or help! my husband just got a job offer in Columbia and we are considering moving across the country to take it... We visited last wkd and while it wasn't love at first sight for me, I think we could make it work. As far as living in the south/culture shock goes I went to school at UVA and recall that for me growing up in CT it felt like the south but for someone from the real south it was not

My concerns are : summer heat. We have an American bulldog mix who is sensitive to heat... what do people do with their dogs in the summer months?

We have been in Los Angeles for five years and while the climate is tough to beat the traffic is horrible... Where would be the best neighborhood, if any, to avoid logjams (drove thru Lexington last Friday and while I thought it was cute seemed pretty busy).

I feel like I've read some awful things on these forums about crime on every block in Columbia where there's not a church... Is it really that bad?

And just for fun, I am into stand up paddling... Do people do that on lake Murray at all?

Lastly we don't have kids yet but plan on starting a family -fingers crossed -soon... We Would like a nice walkable neighborhood with sidewalks for a stroller and a dog. Does a town exist within a reasonable commute to Columbia that has a charming downtown/main st? As opposed to Irmo which felt like it was a major highway with strip malls.

Again appreciate any words of wisdom/guidance you might have.
