Jeepers. If you think our nation's woes, such as they are, are the fault of one guy, or even one group, you might need to widen your focus.

This is pretty far afield from the original topic of this thread, of course, though it's all been an exercise in the absurd.

Remember that NFL players have a players union and they players have gone on strike before. Ms. Nikki might have issues with this.

I'm pretty sure no state, politician or NFL fan wouldn't have issues with it...

"Charleston" lives in 1919? Well, there certainly is a historic tourist district. Outside of that? They didn't have or build Dreamliners in 1919. Or fly C-17's around the world. I could go on..........but back to my point:

You say the Packers only thrive in a 300K metro area because they were founded way back in the early days of the NFL.

Hmmm. Lets see now. The Carolina Panthers first season was 1995. The concept for them began around 1990 through Spartanburg, SC native Jerry Richardson.

The population of Charlotte at that time was 395,000, half of what it is today at around 800K.

If Charleston/North Charleston/Mount Pleasant were to merge (as they should since they are basically one urban area) the city population would be about 280-300K. Hmmm. Strangely similar to what Charlottes was in it's earliest daydreaming days of the Panthers. Columbia and Greenville would both be much larger on paper if SC's strange annexation laws weren't what they were.

So tell me....as a smallish but growing city in 1990 of 395K.....what made Charlotte so special that it could daydream of an NFL team.........but metro areas of similar size of 1990's Charlotte today cannot do the same?

Just sayin'. Charlotte was half the size it is today, if not even smaller than that, when they started daydreaming of an NFL team. In 5-10 years if Columbia or Charleston, or both, were to land a few more big business deals like Boeing was, who knows what those cities growth will get to. And who knows if the NFL....needing more games on TV for those huge TV deals....would want to expand to 40 teams or something so they would have more "product" to put on the TV.

Maybe things'll be different in another hundred years, but for now? We'll just have to make do with the Panthers and, if we must, the Falcons. But keep the dream alive.
Will do!

But remember...in 1990 when SC native Jerry Richardson began the Panthers daydream...Charlotte was a city of 395,000...half the size it is today, and a far smaller metro area than it is today.

Charlotte got it's team when it was still a "small" city......and everyone thought Charlotte had NO CHANCE of getting that team. In fact, the rallying of SC residents played a huge role in getting that team.

GSP.....in 1995, when the Panthers played at Clemson....how did they sell all those seats out, since you say an NFL team just cant play in SC and sell tickets?

BTW, the NFL has already played many games in Charleston, at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium, back in those days when the Packers were founded. Yep. Charleston had NFL football before Charlotte haha

You are confusing so many numbers, GB with a metro of 300k, sure. But, Charlotte's metro in 1995 was 1.2m, a lot higher than Charleston today. And, Charlotte had/has the wealth to sell club seats, suites, advertising etc.....today, Charlotte's population is 2.4m.

If the NFL goes to 40 teams, it will most likely be international. SC is not high on their list because it is the Panther's home market.

Charleston had an NFL team......still living in 1919. Meanwhile, Charlotte as the NFL, NBA, college tournaments, Final Fours, PGA, NASCAR etc......

And you are having trouble reading. I said in 1990, not 1995. They STARTED PLAYING in 1995. The concept? Began in the late 80's, 1990 area. I grew up in the upstate, I remember it well. And in 1988-1990, what was the Charlotte Metro population? 1 million? Charleston's metro is projected to hit one million sometime in the 2020's. Or....about 10 years from now. Exactly when I said an NFL team would be possible....not probable, but possible. Just like it was in 1990 for Charlotte.

Columbias is what now, 800K? Charleston 700K? And both are growing pretty fast. Hell, the South in general is booming in population, and SC is one of the fastest growing states.

As for wealth.....Beaufort County, which neighbors Charleston in the Lowcountry, has a higher household median income than Charlotte. Charlestons is only slightly lower than Charlottes (48K vs 52K). And with Boeing and other large companies wanting to locate to SC, its only going to get better.

So are people laughing and balking at the idea of an NFL team in lower SC in the future? Yep. Just like they laughed at the idea of little ole Charlotte...with a metro area of 1,000,000-ish in the late 80's, getting an NFL team.

Didn't say they had one. Said the NFL played in Charleston. They've played games in Columbia too.

And of course Charlotte has that stuff. There are far more people living there. This was never a thread about comparing Charlotte to SC cities.

It was about SC, and a daydream of an NFL team being in THIS state, particularly the areas of Columbia-Charleston, both of which will have metro areas over 1,000,000 each within 20-30 years.

Exactly like Charlotte was in the late 80's when they dreamed of an NFL team.

For some reason, Charlotte folks just love coming to the SC forum to remind everyone how much bigger they are. Hmmmm.
