I guess Woodland and I took the same mid morning break because I did not see his post when I began mine. Having the Panthers come to Columbia would be a great idea. Its only a 2 hour drive from any city in SC and actually closer to parts of Coastal NC than Charlotte is.

I was at Clemson during that first Panthers season and actually lived on Pine Street (up the hill from the Stadium behind the old Parking Office and Hardees.) And to be honest I could wake up on a Sunday lounge around and really not notice anything till the PA system came on. Clemson is convenient to Greenville and Anderson only- and even those people begrudge the trek.

Actually only 1 county in SC prefers the Faclons over any other team, the Steelers are the 2nd most popular team in the state behind the Panthers.

What county likes the Falcons?

As a note to this pointless thread which could have been answered with Mrpeatie's post if not for our resident troll and the Charleston cheerleader, after you look at the data, not having pro sports is not a bad thing. There are only 32 NFL teams and even less cities. But, the inability to support a team does not make a city a bad place to live. I love having the NFL in Charlotte and have season tickets, for others, they may not know we have a team. It all depends on what you want. And for some, building a stadium which will cost close to $1b is not worth the benefits.

Greenville metro area population is 638,721; the city of Charlotte alone is 792,862 - the metro is 2,217,035

The cost of the Fluor building at Clemson was something like $5 or 6 million- Fluor gave about 3 million but that included employee contributions as well. Other alumni/donors kicked in an additional million. I used to walk by it every single day during construction & have a friend whose grandfather has a statue in it. Or did 15 years ago.

The cost of the Panthers Stadium was $250 million- almost 20 years ago. Cost would be atleast 1 1/2 that amount now and if you put it closer to the coast get ready for more costs in foundations and meeting code in terms of wind loads.

Clemson tickets start at $330 per year; Panther tickets start at $410.

South Carolina barely affords to fund its roads and universities and some would argue its not funding either adequately. I do not see how we can validate throwing a minimum of $200 million towards what would probably be a $400 million dollar construction project.

Here is what people are paying for naming rights which would basically provide no help: ESPN.com: SPORTSBUSINESS - Stadium naming rights Or for a better explanation: Stadium naming rights - AskMen

Basically there is no logical means to support a team in South Carolina. Especially when its fan base would be boxed in between Atlanta and Charlotte's fan bases and have to compete with Clemson, USC and to a lesser extent UGA for attendance.

Greenville metro is actually over 850k since the new designation. Best Places has the old designation. I agree that South Carolina is too close to Atlanta and Charlotte to support an NFL team. Plus those cities are much bigger than our SC cities. Not really an equal comparison, yet it comes up constantly(Charlotte). I myself am a Panthers fan. Go Panthers!

Aiken. You're right for the most part as well, rather than working for a Football team we should aim for something else.
