Hey,

I've been considering moving down South for a long time to work and finish up college. From my trips to South Carolina I've always liked it and wanted to know what cities/areas you all think would be good to move to?

I've heard I should look into Columbia, Charleston, the Myrtle Beach area and towns around those locations. I understand since I'm still working entry level job positions while finishing my last 2.5 years of college there may not be any great areas for my price range but I wanted to inquire anyhow.

Thanks for your time & help,
Matty129

I am a big anti-Myrtle Beach person. I went to college there and hated the area. Way too touristy for my liking. GOOD jobs are also very hard to come by.

I would look into Greenville or Charleston. Greenville is very affordable to live and is located in the Upstate. Charleston is more expensive but I couldn't imagine living anywhere else in the state. Both Greenville and Charleston have places to finish your education and they both offer professional jobs.

Thanks for the quick reply,

I'll look into those areas.

I actually applied to The College of Charleston and am currently waiting for my final documents to come in so I can send them to the University and wait for their decision. Hence why I asked about Charleston as well, is that city any good?

I'd recommend moving to Columbia. Very affordable and lots of people in the college age. Also halfway between the beach and mountains for day trips.

Charleston is gorgeous. It's been voted the #1 travel destination in the US, but the tourists here are nothing like MB. We have awesome beaches and there are a ton of things to do outside. Downtown also has a lot of young people because of the college. There's tons of amazing restaurants, bars, and shopping. We don't really have clubs here.

I wouldn't call Charleston gorgeous. Much of it is kind of rough and tacky looking but it does have a unique historical vibe and worth visiting. I don't think from a daily livgin standpoint it is better than anywhere else in SC that isn't a one stop light town.

The Battery isn't gorgeous? Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island isn't gorgeous? The 300+ year old plantations aren't gorgeous? I'd like to know what your definition of that word is then. I'm a history buff and love seeing the Victorians surrounding the Battery. You don't see much of that anymore. Every major city has rough parts.

I've been to all the Hawaiian islands and that place is gorgeous too. I like to think I take in the scenary more so than the average person.

How often will you drive down Ashley River Road where the plantations are , if you live in Charleston? That is just a tourism thing.

I'm not saying CHarleston is ugly but my view is scenery wise it isn't any better than anywhere else. If you don't care about going to the beach often then no reason to pay more to live there in my view if you can get a job elsewhere. JMO

Well, since my MIL lives around the plantations, I do frequent that road. I rarely go to the beach as well and it's less than 5 miles from where I live. I'm hoping to change that though. But even living in Myrtle Beach, I went to the ocean a few times a year.

I don't know why but I feel you step back in time in this area, and I guess that's why I'm so passionate about the city. I think Greenville is "pretty" but not gorgeous. I lived there prior to moving to Charleston. If I wasn't so keen on this area, I would have stayed in Greenville. Great town and lots of outdoor things to do as well. To the OP, it has access to more lakes and mountains if that's important. The shopping is also much better there and many like that it's a few hours to both Atlanta and Charlotte.

Greenville looks newer to me and the topography is much more interesting. I'm not sure what you mean by gorgeous, I would say Greenville's downtown is more aestically pleasing and landscaped than Charleston's which is more historic.

I think the traffic is really bad in Chucktown and Greenville has much better traffic flow.

I don't tink he should move anywhere in SC without a job lined up but seems like Charleston would be one of the worse places to do that because many young people do move there without jobs lined up and so he'll bec ompeting against them and others not yet there for jobs.
