The Isle of Palms has been renamed twice. It's first recorded name was Hunting Island. It was named by the native Seewee indians who inhabited the island for as long as 25,000 years.
Once the English settlers made landfall on the Isle, they changed the name to Long Island. There's a restaurant named Long Island Cafe that pays homage to this little know fact.
In 1899 the uninhabited island was purchased by J.S. Lawrence and he renamed it the Isle of Palms.
1906 a 50 room hotel was build on the island and by 1912 there was an amusement park established.
The island experienced moderate development over the next 60 years as it was used as a refuge to get away from the Charleston hustle and bustle.
In 1975, the Sea Pines Co., one of the major developer of Hilton Heat Island, started on a 900 acre tract on the north end of the island. They named this development The Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Club which was renamed as is now famously known as Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club...

The Isle of Palms has over 6 miles of white sandy beach, making it a must stop for beach goers and tourists, and is the main reason why the Isle of Palms is such a popular destination now.

Interesting history of a little island with humble beginnings!

Those of us who frequent the Writing Forum are often puzzled by the totally non-language-related things posted in that forum, with questions about Advice to the Lovelorn being one of the most frequently misplaced types of posts in that forum. Similarly, now we have somebody posting geographical/historical trivia in the Automotive Forum.

With the incredibly diverse list of forums available on City Data, why do people post things that are totally unrelated to a forum?

i agree, perhaps another forum would be a better place for this topic, like perhaps the history forum?
