we currently live in northern va, but would like to relocate to SC and we are investigating the current job market and the best towns to live in that's somewhat near the water

You can't generalize about the "South Carolina" job market as there are several different ones aligned with the sub-forums. You also need to consider what your skills are. If you have technical skills the government needs, the most likely area would be Charleston which has a large Navy presence.

The Myrtle Beach job market is largely tourism based, and fairly low wage. The York/Lancaster county area is going to be dependent on Charlotte, so there will be professional and teaching jobs. The Greenville/Spartaburg area is strong in manufacturing with Michelin and BMW, plus some insurance jobs at MetLife (I think).

Columbia has a need for insurance technology workers and insurance industry workers in general, and it has a growing manufacturing and construction industry. There's also a growing tech sector in general. Pharmaceuticals, logistics and shipping and handling are also growing.
