Anderson Independent-Mail confirms Walmart is opening a Neighborhood Market store in Clemson on Old Greenville Highway at Berkeley Drive. The 41,000 square feet store, included in Clemson Towne Center, will have a pharmacy, delicatessen, bakery and gas station.
Plans for a Neigborhood Market store in Anderson on South Carolina 81 near Reed Road are delayed. Traffic patterns are being worked out.
Well... I mean that's great for Clemson, but I must say that area in Anderson isn't exactly in dire need of grocery store. You have BiLo and Publix right down the street. Most people also aren't really walking in this location. I'm not saying it will fail, but they could have more success elsewhere. I can think of four areas just off the top of my head where they could be doing better. Just because the road has high traffic doesn't equal instant success.
Walmart Market will put BILO out of business. Theyd take the thinder from Ingles, Bilo, and Publix. But Publix is Publix, theyll never fail. But dont underestimate the brand.
Also, has the tenants of the new Fusion store been announced? Its been like 2 weeks and the guy said theyd know after a couple days.

Tenants have not been announced yet. I would not expect an announcement sooner than later. It will take time to see how the Fusion Warehouse site will be redeveloped, market the site to prospective tenants, sign them, announce them, and accommodate space for them.

Do not forget Food Lion #2208 (3750 Highway 81 North, Anderson, SC 29621-8200) in the Hopewell community. The store is in a good location for a supermarket, but it is not the right supermarket chain for the area. Food Lion is on the decline. I would not be surprised if the store closes, and the chain exits the market. Most customers will make the drive to Bi-Lo, Ingle's and Publix.
A Walmart Neighborhood Market would do well in the Hopewell community.

Uh, says who, you? I happened to like BiLo there, despite not having some of what I want, and love Publix and Kroger where I'm at. Honestly Walmart's neighborhood market is only a draw for urban neighborhoods, ones lacking a store, or lower income areas. If I was to get excited about a grocery store coming it'd be Trader Joes.

Walmart Neighborhood Market is locating in areas directly across from traditional supermarkets and populated residential areas. It can be viewed as a brand extension, or a traditional supermarket powered by a successful retailer.

I wasnt being literal. I meant if any of the four have to go, Bilo will be first.
