Moving from WI
I will be moving to SC or FL in the next 4 months due to my job. My girlfreind will be leaving her job and looking for a new job in the banking industry. I am looking for a middle class neighborhood. I love hunting and fishing and my girlfriend loves shopping..go figure...If any one has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Aiken and it's a good town. I've been here 32 years. Lots of hunting and fishing, temperate weather, great values on housing. There is plenty of shopping in this town of 25,000 people. We have a mall, WalMart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot, tons of restaurants (both chain and independents). Downtown is home to many exclusive shops and cafe's and pubs. Taxes are pretty low (I pay $600/year on my $135,000 home).
Is it perfect? No. But what place is. Our school system is not the greatest, and we have our fair share of crime (though people don't like to talk about it).
Check out Aiken on CityData and check out the housing market. I think you would like Aiken very much.
Jim

Greg, I work in the banking industry. The Columbia area probably has the most jobs in that industry in SC followed by the Greenville area. You can hunt and fish in just about any part of the state. The 3 big metros (Columbia, Charleston and Greenville) have plenty of shopping, as does Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island. Charleston probably has the best shopping.

I live in Summerville SC, close to Charleston. We have plenty of shopping, the beaches, fishing, both salt and fresh water, and hunting (mostly hunt clubs I think - I'm not a hunter) Depending on her job choice, plenty of different industry available.

Just moved to SC from WI in October. We live in North Augusta and it looks like you could do your hunting, fishing and your gf can get a job at Augusta, GA banks.
Smaller town then Aiken but has just as good as shopping and very comparable to Aiken (we looked there too). Lots of new housing in North Augusta and same schools as Aiken (same county).
Good luck, its going to take a bit to adjust to Southern ways (and I could use any tips on that!)

Different areas in the state have different access to hunting and fishing. The upstate area would probably be your best bet.
Good luck with your move!

Could I be discriminated from being from the North when being interviewed or even before that, when I send my resume? Right now I am finally working (after 12 weeks of searching and don't even ask how many resume's sent out).
Anything that southerners truly dislike from us transplants?

If you haven't moved yet it will make the job hunt more difficult. As far as being from a different area of the country, I would hope that wouldn't hinder you, but if it did, that would more likely be the case in a smaller town. What type of position are you looking for?

Something your girlfriend might want to do is try online applications for banks in the area you choose. I must agree Columbia has alot of banks, too many to list but First Citizens, Wachovia, Allsouth Federal Credit Union, and BB&T are some to choose from. Columbia has two supreme shopping areas Harbison and Village at Sandhill. For you the best thing about SC is there are plenty of areas near Columbia for hunting whether on your own land or by joining a club. Personally my two favorite types of hunting are boar and deer my husband enjoys fishing and turkey hunting. All of which we in SC have plenty of.
