Very interesting interactive map by the NY Times where you can search each state to see where its residents were born from 1900-2012.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2...South_Carolina

The biggest surprise for me is that there are more people born in NC and GA living in SC than vice versa. Also, there are more residents that were born in the Midwest and Northeast than in other Southern states.

There is no "typical SC resident" LOL. And there's a LOT of Georgia outside of Atlanta.

The vast majority of people who grow up in Aiken County were probably born in Augusta, even if their family lived in SC. Many "lifelong" residents of Aiken, Edgefield, and probably some of Barnwell were born in Augusta. I would imagine that many residents of York County were born in Charlotte. The link takes me to a login, so I don't know what the map shows.

I can't really speak for Aiken, but I don't think that many residents of York were really born in Charlotte, although there are more people moving to York from Mecklenburg than vice versa these days. Natives of Rock Hill were mainly born there, and there are lots of transplants from elsewhere living in Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, and Tega Cay.

And I need to clarify that I'm speaking of higher percentages as opposed to raw numbers.

Speaking for Aiken (native Aikenite here), a good bit of friends and some family were born in Augusta. Aiken only has the one hospital, and it has been that way for a very long time...I do have friends born in Aiken, and I was born in Aiken as well. Some family members were born at the 'old Aiken hospital' that was shut down and turned into a government complex I think in the 70s or 80s.

Unless things have changed in Aiken, many choose to drive to Augusta for hospital care for a reason...
