CUICAR is attracting companies, jobs, investment, and producing a great education for its students. Can you share some of your factual knowledge as to how many people actually work on the campus? You clearly have knowledge that none of the rest of us have access to. Surely it's somewhere in your bag of facts

Bag of facts.......interesting, you should try it.

I will not argue education, it seems to be a good program. Economic development wise.........Like I said, it is averaging 70 net job announcements annually over a decade.........what they are not counting is attrition. So, no, I don't see this as a great success. And, it is a terrible failure when you compare reality with Greenville's and Clemson's marketing spin..........the center of worldwide automotive research......that is so far from reality it is laughable. It has a nice sign in I85 if you are a Clemson fan.

And........if you read the attached, Clemson says that ICAR HELPED create over 700 jobs, that is a big difference in creating and helped create and certainly includes Hubbell according to the ICAR annual report. So yes, factually it sees as though they include Hubbell, another company that moved across I85.

http://columbiabusinessreport.mappsi...-cu-icar?rss=0

To recap.......Clemson claims ICAR HELPED create over 700 jobs in just over a decade. Some of the companies they helped were already residents of the upstate, like I said, interesting accounting. Clemson claims this is the world center for automotive research when one NASCAR team performs more automotive research than this entire park. Clemson attracted $4.4m is research funding, that number speaks volumes. So, no, based on these facts.....from the magic bag of facts......this park is not an Econ development success story. Only in Clemson's press release and the Greenville Chamber's eyes is this a success.

So you're no longer claiming that 770 jobs is a gross inflation of reality? Yea sure the campus could be doing better, but it's certainly no failure. I have no desire to split hairs in the definition of the wording on their website. I had no part in its creation nor any tie to the campus.

Read my edit, the short answer is that 770 is way overstated.

You're relying on some reporter's writing ability as your source? Their website says "770 jobs on the campus". Otherwise, as you can see, St Francis and Hubbell at Millennium Campus have a total of 850 jobs. Somehow that figure does not fit into the 770 number.

No, the article refers to Clemson material not a reporter's comprehension.

So we can go through a middle man reporter or get the information from the source. I'll take the original source option. 770 jobs on campus.

I will take a business reporter's view who gained the information from Clemson over a Clemson Architect living in Greenville. There could be 770 jobs on campus........but, if they were already in the upstate, it is not net new. Anyway, we could argue this in 100 different ways and still come to the same conclusion, you think that this is a success and buy into the hype. I understand, you are a Clemson grad and a Greenville resident who wants the city to "Win". I see the numbers and they are not impressive given the broader set of circumstances. But, you did get a nice sign on I85.

The funny thing is....the fact that there is a discrepancy over the exact number (Helped create, on campus, or created) says a lot about how information is manipulated by Clemson & Greenville to paint a great picture of a project that helps create on average 70 jobs annually (for reference........70 jobs equates to about 2 McDonald's restaurants). Sorry, that is pathetic by any measure considering the huge investment by the state and a state agency. Hope the extra $2k premium paid by Clemson students is not funding these projects.

I've only seen one person recognize a discrepancy over the number of jobs at CU-ICAR. They also thought Hubbell accounted for half of the jobs. Call it a failure if you want, but I hardly think the campus or it's mission is done and able to be classified as such.

As for the grads heading north, I believe they are representing their SC education very well. Who knows what dividends that may hold for the future...?

To my knowledge Boeing is bringing a few hundred R&D jobs over the next few years.
