Default Palemtto Schools in SC

I live in the Williamston area and actually work as a home planner with a builder. The school district at Palemtto is wonderful. They are very concerned for our children and they are tough to make sure they are learning what they are being taught. I am very pleased with the district as well as the area in general.

We are looking for a change and house is on the market. Originally from LI, so just love the country up here and have been here for 13 years, so looking for a similar environment, only warmer. We are looking at the Anderson area. Our main criteria is to be at least close to a country setting, inexpensive(taxes are getting out of control here) and safe crime-wise, as it is very safe where we are. Belton and Williamston seem similar in size and feel to where we are with small town feel. We live 5 miles outside of the Johnstown/Gloversville area. These towns(called cities, but more town-like) are about 50,000 combined plus surrounding rural population. Is that similar to Belton, Williamston and surrounding Anderson towns or to Anderson itself? We wouldn't rule out Anderson itself either. At this point we are just researching, but we noticed many listings say area 1, 2, 3, or 4. Would someone be able to tell us which areas are best and which to stay away from, if any, crime-wise. Any other information that would give us a feel for the area would be greatly appreciated, so we have an idea of where to look around when we come down for a visit. Thanks!
I think that you are for sure looking in the right place. We are getting ready to move to Charleston Area. Where the cost of living is so much more to live there. Then the water is so different too. I hate the feel and smell of the water. Then the schools are not the best either.
I have lived in WV, then off to Atlanta Ga. Now I live in Belton SC with my family. I have two boys and we have GREAT SCHOOLS here.
My husband finished school at Clemson and found a job in Moncks Corner, SC.
He is a Horticulture that wants to be a grower. The coast is where we have to move now.
We have 6ac here, with plenty of room for all my animals to roam.
Where no one can see us.
There is a farm on one side of me that is 300ac. Then cross the road, we have 300 ac again. Plenty of wild life to see and a creek on the property.
I love trees, so we have plenty. My boys have really enjoyed living here.
Plus, I feel safe too
I just hate to move, but I have to go where my husband job is.
We have Family that lives in Atlanta, it is three hours away, and Greenville is thirty minutes away. Anderson is twenty minutes, 85 is just twenty minutes away too. No Traffic to speak of either, not like Atlanta Ga.
The Coast is three and half away. Mountain is forty-five, like Clemson.
There is so much to offer here, you cannot go wrong.
Sorry, I took so long; you can see I do not really want to leave.
So now, we wait to sell also and move.
Good luck
Dee
If you have any question, I would be happy to help.

Default More opinions on Anderson/Greenville area?

I wanted to see if anyone else agreed or disagreed with this poster's comment. I had heard this once before from a fellow Illinoisan who had lived in South Carolina for a few years, so that's why I ask. My overall impression has been that people are very friendly and welcoming to us northerners (we're considering moving in a few months). I'm hoping this negative attitude toward "Yankees" is more the exception than the rule. Can anyone comment on whether this is also the case among younger people, or if it tends to be among the older generation? I've heard mostly great things on this forum, and this was a little disheartening. Thanks!

I'm not saying that to mean or cruel. I am a native South Carolinian. But, before moving down here, you need to understand what that means. Most of us are of Irish or Scot-Irish descent. We are strong-willed, opinionated and full of fight.

There is a huge underground community here that is still fighting the Civil War, especially here in the Upstate. Outsiders (read: Yankees) would be well advised to mind their Ps and Qs when getting to know the locals. I've lived all over the eastern US from NW Ohio to Southwest Florida and every place has had its good points and bad. I've come back to SC because I'm getting old now and it's time to rest. I'm just trying to give you a friendly warning. Our small towns look quaint and inviting but violent crime is something that you're not going to get away from by coming here.

As for employment opportunities, Charleston, Greenville and Columbia, in that order, are the only cities with any economic growth but they are crazy places to live. If you have school children, you should seriously consider home schooling them. Property is still relatively cheap here, even in the cities but your best deal is in the country. You'll have to have well dug, but that's okay. Our water is plentiful and pure, due to lack of industry.

I realize I've run on a bit but I'm passionate about my state and don't want you to come here not knowing what you're getting into.

Anderson is close to Clemson which is close to Jocasee and other outdoorsy goodness. The YMCA in Anderson is really nice. In fact, you may want to consider Clemson or Pendleton for places to live as well.

I also grew up on LI and lived in many states--and two of them were in the South. SC was one of the most difficult adjustments for me, so I eventually left. Pay close attention to Nellville's comments.
