Don't leave out Chesterfield County. It is full of small towns and Chesterfield has recenty built new schools. Chesterfield and Cheraw are full of history. In of the specialty small town shops you can find the Chestefield Co history book. Chesterfield has your basic small town shops with a great produce stand. It has three stop lights, three gas stations, two grocery stores, a dollar store, plus the government building for the county are there. It is about 1.5 hour from Charlotte NC and about 2 hours from Myrtle Beach. The schools are small and located in good places and the cost of living is not tooo expensive. I lived in Ruby, a small town in Chesterfield Co with only about 300 people and attended Ruby School. Every town in Chesterfield Co has an annual celebration of some sort, Pageland has the Watermelon Festival in July, Ruby has the Jewel City Jubilee in September, Chesterfield has the Olde Towne Celebration in October and Cheraw has the Spring Fling in April (for just a few). There is nothing better than living in a small town, I couldn't imagine my kids not being able to play outside compared to the backyard. We tried city living for awhile it didn't work.

Somehow I neglected to mention Abbeville and Due West, both of which are great old small towns. They have lots of history and are very attractive. You may also want to check into the Hartwell Georgia area, which sits on the GA/SC state border next to Lake Hartwell.
