When you get to Black Mountain, North Carolina, be sure to spend the night at the Red Rocker Inn. It is a famous, old fahioned Inn with a fantastic gourmet dinner served each night, and family style, awesome breakfast the next morning. There are a lot of neat little shops and restaurants within walking distance - be sure to do lunch at the Dr. Pepper restaurant.

[quote=spark240;2596334]Hi folks.

I'm planning a road trip for May. I haven't worked out the exact itinerary yet (except I know that I will definitely be going through Birmingham) but the towns listed below are possible stops. I'd be interested in hearing from natives or current residents of these towns about things to see, places to stay, and places to eat, in the towns mentioned or along the roads between. I like happening downtowns and I like country back roads. I might decide to tent-camp some nights. I appreciate history and local flavor. I'm not interested in anything with a national chain name on it, or anything real expensive.

Thanks for your help.

Tennessee: Sevierville, Smoky mountians are Great for camping, Cades cove is Great. In Farragut Tn There is A Great BBQ hole in the wall called Otts on Kingston pike.

Default Greenville, Aiken, etc.

The sight of downtown Greenville nearly brought a tear to my eye, last summer. I was in town for a few job interviews, and a buddy of mine an I decided to check it out, over a weekend.The nightly news told me downtown Greenville doesn't exist in America, anymore. Any day or night of the week, Greenville is bustling with folks.

The food, nightlife, etc., are excellent.

I agree that Greenville, SC is a must-see. I normally avoid cities, but it's one of the things that sold me on the area. Another nice drive is all along Rt 11, near the SC/NC border, including Table Rock, as Skyliner said. You can then cross the border up into NC, and go to places like Highlands, then follow the road to Franklin. You won't soon forget that stretch of 'highway'! What I've always noticed, though, is that the mountains are not as big in SC, but there is very little traffic. Once you get into the gorgeous NC mountains, you'll be sharing the experience with a LOT more cars.
