Girl, you are fine, because you are a military family. We are proud of you all. Any Yankee that will sign up for the military and stand for our country is welcome in my home state. And your son is now a "Homeboy" ha ha, just raise him as a good Southern boy and you will have no probs.

Yankees are not welcomed, because of their attitude. They think they own everything and are better than other people. I am a Southerner living up north and I have lived in NY and contrary to what you say, they bash and make fun of Southerners and Southern values all the time. They make jokes about accents of Southerners, they make fun of NASCAR, of the Rebel Flag, of pick up trucks, they make racist statements about Rednecks and they make black slave jokes all the time--i dont know where you have been Barbara.
I have lived all over the Northeastern US and they have the same behavior, which is very disrespectful to rural Americans, to people who are Christians and Southerners , Conservatives and Traditionalists. It is laughable that you think that the NYers dont bash Southernres--the media is all located in NY and they are drowning in liberal anti-Southern rhetoric.
The idea that NYers are bashing southerners, with their elitest views about living in the big city looking down on rural people who they think have no culture.
wake up!!

I've heard jokes like that too.
One that was popular way at my college is to describe somewhere rural:
"Where the men are men and the sheep are afraid..."

Stereotyping frustrates me.

I disagree and think that blanket stereotyping is dangerous. I came from Northern NJ just outside of NYC, and let me tell you something about my peers in my immediate area:
1) Half of my church - about 100 people - watched NASCAR faithfully whenever it was on tv. A small cross-section of those 100 people also made the pilgrimage down south to see a NASCAR race in person. All of those people were born and bred NJers or NYers. They LOVED NASCAR.
2) Among those same 100 people? At least 25% of them drove pickup trucks. Again - all Yankees.
They are some of the most humble people I know, and would never put other people down. None of them made jokes about Southerners. None of them made racist comments or told redneck jokes.
I'm a "Yankee" (via Virginia) and I've never made a joke about southerners, made racist comments or told a redneck joke. I care about my community, I love my family and friends, and I want a good life for us and them. I moved to a place that I *hoped* would accept me for who I am, not hate me because of where I came from.
I don't think I'm entitled to anything and I don't think I'm better than anyone else on this planet. I'm just trying to make my way through this world one day at a time and will hopefully leave it a little better than the way I found it.
Stereotyping is dangerous because it pigeonholes people that are unique and individual. Don't say "ALL" Yankees are bad - they're not. Just like all Southerners aren't rednecks. Not all people in Wisconsin hate cheese. Not all Bostonians love the Kennedy family. Not all people in Miami are illegals from Cuba. Not all Mexicans are lazy. Not all black people are thieves. Not all whites are racist. Not all men are chauvenists (sp). You see what I mean? Those statements are ridiculous, because they're just not true for ALL of the people being couched within the statement.

thats a church, in Manhattan where I lived as well as in providence RI and in Philadelphia and upstate New York , i knew many many people who had those jokes, so thats great that your church was so wonderful--but that doesnt mean that the Yankees dont say those things cause they do. Go to the GA page, or the Virginia, or TN or Texas page--all the Yankees are saying stupid things about the south like Racism or Bugs and backwards behavior.

Could you possibly spew any more crap???? Good frickin grief this crap is about the most moronic junk Ive ever read. So youre calling me a liberal, non-pickup drivin, Nascar hatin, Southern hater just cuz I live in Illinois? Boy, you really know how to **** off a Yankee dont you????? Id watch what you say real carefully before you go and post crap like this. Also, Im just curious what makes you think "we own everything". LOLOL Where do you dream up this stuff?
And like you southerners dont make fun of Yankees? We might say funny jokes about some things, but we dont drive around with bumper stickers that say "Yankee go home" or "welcome to the south! Now get out!". I lived in TN and was subjected to that crap all the time. I think your stupid post was more hateful than anything Ive heard said about Southerners. Your post is downright rude, obnoxious, false, sterotypical and just plain ignorant. I, as a "yankee", am offended by this post.

I am as Yankee as they come, and fyi, you haven't seen rude until you've lived in Europe for 10 years. Everyone thinks Austria is so sweet and pretty, but until you've been yelled at by a cashier, complete strangers, government workers, had your kids shoved and pushed by old women, taxed and charged, overcharged and cheated, been shamed in public and bodily moved off the sidewalk, you don't know how blessed and wonderful the US is - all over. We certainly have our faults, but wow, what we take for granted. And still, we have friends here, and anyone can make the best of their situation and find kindness when you look for it and give it unconditionally. It make take some bruising, but it's true, we're Americans and that says a lot this day in age. Better we stick together in this world, huh? Is it worth the fight?

I worked in Manhattan for seven years for three different large companies and NEVER came across the bias you are claiming. I commuted daily on NYC buses and subways and never heard the bias you are claiming. I lived in Queens for four years and never heard the bias you are claiming.
Is it possible that you are exactly like these Yankees you complain about? As much as you claim they spew garbage about the South - aren't you doing the EXACT SAME THING about the North?

I agree with Adream that not all Yankees are rude. I live in VT and my husband and I have been going to Myrtle Beach for 6 years now. We love it so much that we are planning on moving there in 4 years. You have rude people everywhere you go, its not just in the North. Its all in how you were brought up.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you and SteveO said. There is plenty of discrimination all across the board and none of it is useful, justifiable or doing a bit of good toward inspiring tolerance and, heaven forbid, sincere respect for everyone. Perhaps this poster just doesn't understand how ugly their statements are. Hmm, this is an anonymous place so I guess people feel free to "spew," generalize till it's absurd and run any kind of diplomacy and tact off into a ditch.
Whatever!
I think educated people know it's just a personal rant and to not buy into it.
Plain truth is that labels like Yankee and Redneck and many more are based on FEAR of someone who is different than you and in this forum, fear of those different people moving in and, yes I say this in jest, TAKING OVER!
Like it or not, this is still a free country where we are all blessed with the right to move freely from place to place at will.
Fear mongering won't keep the wolf away from the door and who knows, if you opened your mind a little and let go of your needless apprehensions, you might even like them. What a concept.
That's my post for the day. The little darlings want their supper.
Have you wrapped your Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza (and perhaps Ramadan) gifts yet?
