What's going on August 8th-9th? (Florence, Darlington: hotel, area, schedule)

Hello everyone. My wife and I are planning a family trip to Florida, leaving from NY August 8th. In past years, we have made this a two day drive, spending the night at a hotel in Florence. I went to make hotel reservations last night, and for the life of me I could not find a room available at a hotel along I-95. I wound up booking a room in North Carolina, about 20 miles from the state line.

Is there a big event going on in Florence or the immediate area that weekend? I'm not complaining or anything, just curious.

It could possible be a sports tournament going on. Florence hosts several different youth tourneys. My daughter plays travel volleyball. When we go to the regional tourney, it is always advised to book your rooms early because they fill up quickly.

Could also be a race in Darlington that weekend. I'm not a NASCAR fan so I don't know the schedule but that would fill up every hotel.

Tournament is a strong possibility. I thought NASCAR, but I checked the schedule and they are in upstate NY that weekend.
