Default Voting in the Primary

Being fairly new here...I wondered if you had to be registered as a DEMOCRAT or REPUBLICAN in order to vote in a primary. I think I registered at the DMV but don't recall picking a party.

virginia doesn't have registration by party. when you go to vote on february 12 they will ask you at the polling place, do you want to vote in the democratic or republican race? it's then that you choose.

Not that the people here won't try to help you, but this is a nationwide Real Estate forum. You might want to go ask your question in your State Forum.

In South Carolina you may vote in either primary, but not both. You do not resister for a party here at all.

Question Voting in SC?

But don't they issue some kind of voter ID card? I recall a story about the governor having to drive back from Columbia to Charleston to get his ID so he could vote. I've always wondered whether that isn't a factor in SC's historically low voter turnout. May it improve today!

You don't have to have a voter regis. card to vote in the primary, but did have to show some kind of ID, such as a driver's license. However, the poll worker did look up my name in the computer to be sure I was listed, which I presume meant that I was registered. I am a registered voter, but we don't register as a Democrat or a Republican and you can vote however you please. I tend to vote for the candidate, not the party and usually vote for some from each party, depending on their views on the various issues.

In CA you don't need ID but Democrats can't vote in the Republican primary etc. I don't know what they do about Independents. Having a ball just now watching your primary on MSNBC. Everyone I know is watching. SC is the center of attention on a weekend when most of California is pouring rain or already flooded and everyone's staying in. You guys have all the fun!

The national news agencies have been here for weeks, especially here in Columbia. The other states now get to have all the attention.
