Default SC Vehicle Registration

I'm moving to Pawley's Island very soon, but my car tags are about to expire. What does it cost to register your vehicles in SC? It costs around $100 here in Shelby County, TN. I would like to register where I'm moving, but if its a lot more I'll do it here before I move.

It depends on how old your vehicle is and which county you live in. In South Carolina, you pay property tax on your vehicle each year.

South Carolina will only give you 90 days (I Think) before you must register there. Call the DMV in Georgetown. They are very helpful and will tell you exactly how to go about it and what to bring. The South carolina DMV also has a helpful web-site for new residents as does the SC dept of Taxation.

Congratulations on your move! Glad you were able to narrow it down, you've picked a great location.

In order to register your car you have to go to the courthouse in G-town to pay the taxes (like the others have said, amount depends on the year/type of car). Then you have to head over to the DMV to register the car... make sure you have adequate ID & insurance cards. Everyone was quite helpful and it did not take long at all. The DMV in G-town is pretty quick, too.
